Okay, so I just got done watching Awesome Battles Everywhere. Genuinely one of the greatest films of all time. I can't believe how good this shit was. Better than There Will Be Blood is a tough call, but I already know it will be infinitely more rewatchable. Holy fucking shit.

That Steely Dan needle drop when introducing Sensei and 16 year old Willa might be the best needle drop ever. I was floating.

So good! I loved all the tiny little humorous details sprinkled throughout, like Sensei using a gamer chair at his dojo. Some real Coens energy throughout, filtered through PTA's unique lens. Lots of beautiful tracking shots. Thar chase scene with the undulating roads was so cool --very simple but very fun. And everything pointed back to trust. Is it top top top tier PTA? No, but definitely top 5

I doubt it passes Inherent Vice or Punch Drunk Love for me.

Don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't like this movie (One Battle After Another). I liked this movie! I just don't know that it works all the way around.

I can only understand this movie as a comedy, right? And maybe my big problem is that I don't think Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn are funny. This movie is definitely trying to be funny, and trying to make me laugh. But these guys just aren't funny. So it kind of just ends up feeling manic and then like Sean Penn is doing a silly walk. But it's not actually funny to me?

Benicio del Toro is legitimately funny, for sure. Maybe because he doesn't ever try to do too much. Probably my favorite moment of this movie is when he gets arrested. Very simple, very funny.

And the road stuff on the chase scene is cool.

I'm sure it overall works emotionally though it didn't really hit me hard there.

I just don't think it won me.

I felt the same way. The pacing is also weirdly jerky. It's ok, but pretty mid.

It's OK to have different opinions, of course. But I think you're just not getting the movie. This masterpiece has many layers of meaning and entertainment.

Interesting, I think the pace is one of the movie's strengths. I love how it moves.

I'm looking forward to the post-all of this nonsense - world where we're all allowed to be honest and admit that Boogie Night is an actual terrible movie.
