Re: Matt Cameron quits Pearl Jam
This is a shame. I saw that article or report where he was suggesting that he wanted the 70 minute show format and maybe the band should really consider that but with the caveat that they should adjust their expectations of stage setups and ticket pricing.
Surveying the rumors and suggestions, I am only really hopeful for a Josh Freese potential but I really think that would end up as a case that he was doing it for the money and not being genuinely excited about much of the music.
The most sad thing I see from all of this is some of the side comments from Matt about how it seemed like Pearl Jam was established and had their thing and how he was their for Soundgarden’s inception (but I thought Soundgarden had another drummer at one point.). To me, matt made his mark with Pearl Jam and played a great part for these 27 years. He probably wanted to write more music and contribute there and there was probably a bit of a struggle there and he hit that age and the money was right for him to call this.
In my view, Matt injected a lot of energy and life into the band all throughout. I think at the end of jack’s tenure, they were starting to lose some punch and Matt brought some punch back. I actually loved the sound Matt brought in 1998 with some unique fills and approaches to songs. He seemed to dial some things down as time went on with the older stuff but if would’ve given him more joy to approach things his way, I wish he would’ve kept with that.

Re: Matt Cameron quits Pearl Jam
i'm pretty sure chris cornell was the first drummer for soundgarden.
i also don't think any of this is sad. if anything, i'm happy matt is at a place in his life he can do whatever he wants. if he's tired of touring and playing long shows, being in arguably the best live band ever probably isn't awesome. admittedly, he's part of the reason for pearl jam's legacy as a live band. he can play anything. dude's a machine.

yeah chris was the first one but he also sang so he moved upfront and they got Scott Sundquist for a couple of years.

Re: Matt Cameron quits Pearl Jam
I mean, I would personally rather them get a new drummer then move to 70 minute sets. I feel like that would really kill the band. Im sure that 70 minute set would be great, but they have such a wonderful discography reducing their shows to an hour would be insane to me.Lloyd Dobler wrote:This is a shame. In some ways I think moving from 3 hour shows to a 2 hour and 20 minute show produced a tighter concert, and not in a bad way, but when you go beyond that it just seems like you're old and washed up, and they most definitely are not (well old maybe, but washed up not yet)

Paul McCartney is doing 35-song shows after doing 12-song VIP pre-show sets. So that 47 songs a night. And he’s 85 fucking years old. Suck it up Matt Cameron.

Drumming is harder than singing "naaah nah nah nah nah-nah-nah naaah, heeey Juuude" one hundred times in a row. I mean he's a legend, but have you seen that shit? The song never ends. Shut the fuck up, already.

Matt sounds like he wanted to work on the Soundgarden album un-molested
