PTA claims to have a lot of affection for porno chic but, if that's the case, I think it's strange that the movie winds up in such a stereotypically dark and negative and cruel place. And hearing people like Bob Chinn and Jamie Gillis speak about how offended they were by how the movie portrayed certain things made me like it even less.
I am sure a fresh viewing might be beneficial but don't think I can bring myself to watch, much less revisit, anything Wahlberg stars in.
Oh, this was directed at me. Just noting the history surrounding the Wonderland murders and that the porn industry may very well not be a really great scene.Jorge wrote:What?

I'm listening to The Big Picture podcast ep about OBAA. It's weird that Amanda, Sean and Chris all love it and agree that it's "the best movie of the year" and "the best movie of the decade."
But also, is it either of those things? I guess, it's up there for this year. But I pretty sure I could name a dozen or maybe two dozen movies of the decade that are better -- and I say that as a person who thinks the movie is really good.

I liked it a lot, but it's a simple, unchallenging movie, and very much a crowd-pleaser. It makes sense to me that people are going nuts about it. But that's how it always is with opinions. I agree with you that there are tons of better movies, but we probably drastically disagree on which those movies are

A text from a friend of mine about this conversation:
"I think it greatly benefits from the fact that it's extremely well made in a way that movies just aren't anymore and haven't been in a while and that overrates it slightly. It's excellent, but it's also not even close to his best work."
I feel like everything he said there is exactly right.

I didn’t listen to it, but they did an additional episode with Van Lathan who brought some contrarian views, from what I understand. One thing I like about TBP is that they just love movies, and they’re very enthusiastic and are having a good time most of the time (I also like The Watch but the amount of concern-trolling and doom and gloom gets to me sometimes), but yeah, it was a bit much at times.epilogue wrote:I'm listening to The Big Picture podcast ep about OBAA. I plan on listening to the Van ep after this -- he's usually a little misogynistic for me, but I also appreciate his POV in general, even when I disagree.Simple Torture wrote:I didn’t listen to it, but they did an additional episode with Van Lathan who brought some contrarian views, from what I understand. But TBP says they "just love movies" but I find that isn't really true (their talk about Barbie or Wicked, for example). They trash and misunderstand just as much as they "celebrate." It's gotten worse as time goes on, which makes sense. Old white dude and contrarian white lady have "views!". I get it.
The Watch is still another regular rotation pod for me. I still think Chris is interesting, he has different taste than me, but he feels authentic and genuine, whereas Andy has just lost his goddamn mind. I can't really listen to him anymore. It's the most out of touch white entitled dad-core shit I've encountered on the internet. Dude has lost it. Honestly, the doom and gloom stuff is the only thing I agree with Andy on anymore.

Maybe I'm confused. It's just that the obvious answer to your question "is it (those things)?" is "depends on the individual." What were you getting at otherwise?epilogue wrote:Well sure. Tbf I only listen to like one out every five episodes of TBP, so I probably miss a lot of that stuff.
I lost a lot of respect for Andy when he took the Harry Potter job. His discussions about fatherhood and how that relates to media resonate a lot with me, though, for obvious reasons. Maybe someday you’ll have a ward like Chris.

It's interesting how a movie like this opens itself to such varied readings. You've got BEE screeching about how people only like it because of its political content, when to me it's a totally depoliticized film that takes the revolutionary backdrop as a plot element instead of anything more deeply thematic. I don't think it has much to say from a political standpoint

I get relating to Andy on fatherhood terms fatherhood. I just hate how "old man-core" he is about stuff anymore. It's like he has no idea how to appreciate art that doesn't 100% pander to him and his taste. It's a bummer, because I used to think he was a really insightful guy.

I totally agree with you. I mean, there is stuff "to say" in terms of race and nationalism, stuff that PT clearly thinks about, stuff that we should all consider in the American context, but otherwise, I think you're right. There is a POV but it isn't necessarily a political POV.Jorge wrote:It's interesting how a movie like this opens itself to such varied readings.
