Re: TV: Slow Horses (Apple TV+)
I liked this season, it was the first time I had read the book before watching the story unfold on screen, but there were enough differences that the show was still surprising and fun to follow.
For what it’s worth, there’s an adaptation of another Herron novel, Down Cemetery Road, that just premiered on Apple. It’s not spoiling anything to say that these books occur in the same universe as Slow Horses, but it’s only very, very tangentially related. I dunno, I might skip this one, until I read some reviews at least.

Yeah that Down Cemetery Road is on my watchlist. The only thing I didn't like for this season of Slow Horses was that Roddy just kind of disappeared the last two episodes. I wish they would have at least shown him returning to Slough House and making some stupid comment to everyone. The storyline for next season looks pretty interesting.Simple Torture wrote:I liked this season, it was the first time I had read the book before watching the story unfold on screen, but there were enough differences that the show was still surprising and fun to follow.

Yeah, I think as I mentioned in some previous posts, the Roddy storyline was a but muddied, especially compared to the books. It was very odd that they just let him sit in on those other tech agents working the case while he was ostensibly still under suspicion for espionage.E.H. There was one other big difference between the book and the season that I think is worth mentioning: in the book, the terrorists were North Koreans sent over by the government to destabilize London, not Libyans looking for revenge. Also, Tara is not an agent in the book--she's being forced to cooperate, with a threat of relatives in NK being killed if she doesn't help them. Really changes the geopolitical thrust of the story, but I felt like it still worked.

I didn’t think the two were related. That’s why I’ve not started reading them.Simple Torture wrote:I liked this season, it was the first time I had read the book before watching the story unfold on screen, but there were enough differences that the show was still surprising and fun to follow.

Re: TV: Slow Horses (Apple TV+)
It's so loosely connected that it's barely worth noting. The inciting incident of DCR is mentioned offhand in the book Reconstruction, which features Bad Sam Chapman as a main character, who of course features in the first few seasons/books of Slow Horses/Slough House. So there's really no character crossover, it's just that it's the same world.wease wrote:I didn’t think the two were related. I also have a theory that Herron's works take place in the same universe as Roberto Bolano's fiction, but that's a story for another day.

I’ve heard that the next season actually covers the next two books. Don’t know if that means the season will be expanded or if the books will be incredibly compressed.E.H. Ruddock wrote:The storyline for next season looks pretty interesting.
I also didn’t notice Syril Karn in the trailer. Can’t wait for dime’s reading of season 6!

I just started Joe Country this week as well! I also read "This Is What Happened" last week, which is unconnected to the rest of Herron's work but does include elements of espionage. It was good.wease wrote:Just started Joe Country last night. Wonderful start.

I started watching but still haven’t gotten through episode 1. I was flabbergasted to learn that the show runner is the voice of Mummy Pig on Peppa Pig.E.H. Ruddock wrote:Down Cemetery Road is pretty good through the first two episodes

There’s some nice little twists in episodes two and three. And Ruth Wilson is great. I loved her in Luther.Simple Torture wrote:I started watching but still haven’t gotten through episode 1. It’s been years since I watched Luther, but I remember loving it. There may have been one or two seasons I never got to.E.H. Ruddock wrote:There’s some nice little twists in episodes two and three. I read the book so I know at least some of the twists (like the climactic reveal in episode 1), but I’ve heard it does diverge from the text at points.
I love the actor playing Hazma (Adeel Akhtar). He was phenomenal in the first season of Sherwood.

I thought this was an overall uneven season. I still enjoyed it, but it didn't feel like the same show.

We started DCR the other night. I liked it. It wasn't as instantly gripping as Slow Horses, but I'm glad to have another detective show with some shared DNA. Cast is great.Simple Torture wrote:I liked this season, it was the first time I had read the book before watching the story unfold on screen, but there were enough differences that the show was still surprising and fun to follow.

Yeah I’ve caught up with DCR. The cast really is good. But it does have that different pace, and I feel like it’s running long. I can’t believe there are going to be eight episodes, it feels more like a sixer.epilogue wrote:We started DCR the other night. I liked it. I’ve finished the next two books which is what the next season is based on. Don’t really know why they’ve decided to mix them together but I kinda have it worked out in my head how they could do it. Well, part of it anyway. Gonna be fun to see if I’m right.
