His actions were extremely stupid and selfish, however I wasn't aware that his ex-partner was/is a crackhead who didn't have custody of the children. Sounds like that was about to change via family court, so he flipped. I understand his frustration, but he went about it the wrong way. Just a shitty situation from all sides.

Glad the kids are unhurt. Physically, at least. Going to be a tough road for them.
