Another home run for Gilligan. Both episodes were terrific but that first one was an alltimer.

Re: TV: Pluribus (Apple TV)
Sci-fi has been exploring what makes us human for 75 years so this didn’t feel like it was breaking any new ground. The remaining strong personalities seem to represent the general responses all human beings would adopt - denial so you can cope/carry on (he’s my son), hedonism (fly Air Force One, eat all the food, fuck everything in sight), or recalcitrance/fight back (protagonist).
My intrusive thought in episode 2 was she could have waited until Air Force One reached cruising altitude and then lit up someone on the ground to send fuckboy to a flaming death.
I am looking forward to the discussions this show will provoke at work for the next couple months.

Carol is Bammer, Burt is Cassanova McBoner, and the rest of us (RM’s hive mind) are the infected.

Have you read Brave New World? Published in 1932.zeb wrote:I dunno, felt like pretty new ground to me.
Carol is the new John. The rest of the population doesn’t share a collective consciousness, but “everyone is happy now” is one of the cornerstones of the society that is literally bred to like what they have to do.
It’s an incredible and, in many ways, eerily prophetic book. If this show evokes some of the discussions that novel has, it’s worthwhile.

Well sure, it's not a brand new theme in terms of the history of storytelling but I think it's presented in a novel and compelling manner.

every story is the same, Jurassic Park is just Frankenstein with dinosaurs; you try to keep the messages and the modes fresh, that's all

Hmm... what other movies and shows are actually Frankenstein? And what was the even originaler Frankenstein?

Why shouldn't Carol just keep throwing tantrums and kill the virus off?

because she would wipe out the human race... ? ? They aren't struggling or unhappy, they simply lost their individuality, which all evidence points to being a good thing for allepilogue wrote:Why shouldn't Carol just keep throwing tantrums and kill the virus off?

Of they have no individuality they are no longer humanity. She would not be killing humans. The virus has already killed them.

Yeah but you saw the guilt she felt when she found out she inadvertently killed 11 million. Plus, maybe she doesn’t want to be the only ones left with the handful she’s already met.
Why doesn’t that Indian mom’s anger set them off like Carol’s does? Is it because Carol’s fury is directed at virus-people?

they are still living and breathing, and by all evidence are happy. even happier than she. they have no ill will toward her. why kill them? because she doesn't understand?epilogue wrote:Of they have no individuality they are no longer humanity. the only thing that sets them off so far is carol pushing them in some way, not simply expression of angerwease wrote:Yeah but you saw the guilt she felt when she found out she inadvertently killed 11 million. Plus, maybe she doesn’t want to be the only ones left with the handful she’s already met.

Re: TV: Pluribus (Apple TV)
Obviously, she's conflicted. That's why I'm asking the question. SHOULD she be conflicted?wease wrote:Yeah but you saw the guilt she felt when she found out she inadvertently killed 11 million. Plus, maybe she doesn’t want to be the only ones left with the handful she’s already met.
I look forward to the exploration of Carol and her inner life, because what we've seen so far tells us she doesn't actually like most other people and doesn't want to connect.i imagine that's gonna be a large part of the show's arc.
Great question. Another thing I expect to be explored. Perhaps, it's because she still has someone, a family to care for? Carol is alone? I don't know, but I'm intrigued.wease wrote:Why doesn’t that Indian mom’s anger set them off like Carol’s does? Is it because Carol’s fury is directed at virus-people?

Well they told her they want to assimilate her and she clearly doesn't want that. So there is a threat and perceived I'll will.tree_ wrote:they are still living and breathing, and by all evidence are happy. even happier than she. they have no ill will toward her. why kill them? because she doesn't understand?epilogue wrote:Of they have no individuality they are no longer humanity. If this show is Gilligan wrestling with AI, I have to believe whatever "they" are up to, it ain't good.

Re: TV: Pluribus (Apple TV)
all evidence so far shows this is a good for mankind and everything on the planet. the central tension for me is: why hold onto individuality at all, if it causes so much strife? they aren't zombies. they still think and feel. it's simply that they think and feel as one instead of as individuals.epilogue wrote:Well they told her they want to assimilate her and she clearly doesn't want that.
