There are two games that sprung to mind when reading this part:

Heretic was a first-person shooter developed by id Software (the DOOM 1993 guys) and, at the age of ~9, it was the first game of its type that I tried to beat without cheats on hard mode. I say hard mode, but it was the second-to-hardest setting (the hardest setting was basically impossible. Think "Nightmare" in DOOM. Most people play on "Ultra-violence", and for good reason). It definitely taught me to persist in the face of almost certain defeat. Killer experience.

The other game is Dark Souls (2011). I was obviously no longer a child, but holy fuck did this game make me feel like one. I was battered and beaten every which way for countless hours. I wanted to give up. I even blew up at my good friend who recommended it. "Did I just waste $50!? This game is bullshit!" But I pushed through, and it was easily the most rewarding gaming experience of my life. My buddy later said that he didn't give me any pointers or encourage me to persist because "I needed to want to win." He understood the importance of playing a game "blind", and I thank him for that. It was some real Mr. Miyagi shit, in retrospect. Anyway, incredible game.

Oh man, you're in for a treat. All of the gravity mechanics of Galaxy 1, but no filler. It's just one zany, creative idea after another.

3D Mario games tend to come in two different flavors (exploration and pure platforming). Both have some of the other, but I think tend to perform the pure platforming games (like Galaxy) slightly more. It's probably why I like Super Mario Bros. 3 over World.

Mario Odyssey
Fire Emlem
Xenoblade
Bayonetta
Pikmin
are all solid choices. I also love Valkyria Chronicles 1 & 4.

Xenoblade's are 100+ hours. Be ready for a time investment.

Zelda games + Xenoblade games = 1,000 hours of fun! Legit 1,000 hours.

Play BotW before TotK. There's also Skyward Sword, Echoes of Wisdom, Cadence of Hyrule, Hyrule Warriors 1 & 2.

Some other options:

Pikmin 4
Mario vs. Rabbids: Sparks of Hope
Mario Maker 2
Luigi's Mansion 3
Metroid Prime: Remastered (Metroid Prime is releasing next month)
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
Donkey Kong Country 2: Tropical Freeze
Super Mario RPG

I can keep going...

My taste in games probably don't align with anyone else here, but here are my most played Switch games:

Civilization VI and VII
Football Manager - various years
Fifa - various years, they have now changed the name to EA Sports FC, and the current version is EA Sports FC 26
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Super Mario Wonder
Super Mario Maker
New Super Mario Bros Deluxe
Super Smash Bros Ultimate (fantastic game, probably the best)
Pinball FX (and previous versions FX3 and Star Wars Pinball)
Super Mario Odyssey
Rayman Legends
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
Kirby and the Forgotten Land (my five year old daughter loves this)
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Pure Mahjong

Not a big Zelda-fan, but I did put 8 hours into Breath of the Wild.
