absolutely loved it, obviously; not quite as perfect as act 1 but almost there and I did cry my eyes out for the final number
I didn’t have a desire to watch the first Wicked but recorded it the other day night when it was NBC. I was pleasantly surprised. Starts off slow but builds to that ending with the Wizard reveal and motives, and Elphaba and Glinda tortured split.
I look forward to seeing the 2nd one. Since they split the musical into two movies, how much do both movies follow the live show?
pretty closely, they're two acts of the same story really (it's not entirely accurate that the new one is a "sequel", it's not really a standalone film and that's why some critics aren't liking it)

I can't remember if I've talked about it here but I really loved the Maguire book. I read that in the early 00s in middle of a big, personal "Ozaissance" (that's also when I read 'Was' by Geoff Ryman; which I cannot recommend enough for fiction readers and Oz fans). And when I saw the musical on Broadway years later (this must have been 2009?) I was underwhelmed. The show didn't totally hang together for me on stage.
As such, I didn't have high expectations for the film, especially having it split into two. But I was so blown away and utterly shattered by part one. It's an exceptional piece of art and I am so excited for part two, knowing what's coming (and knowing there will be changed, too!). I know it's going to wreck me in the best way.

act 2 of the show is notoriously muddled and although I still love it, I see the criticisms; the film version doesn't do a perfect job of ironing out all of the issues, but it has a good go and in many ways succeeds, adding some great touches of its own; if part 1 is a 10/10, part 2 is still an 8.5/9 for me, and although it has a bit more of a "montage" feel to it in some places, and perhaps doesn't let every narrative beat breathe as much as the first film did, it still hit me hard as a poetic and metaphorical piece of art
overall I think John M. Chu smashed it, stuck the landing, and I'm very grateful to him and the cast for bringing this musical into fruition, since it's been so instrumental (lol) in my "second upbringing"

I watched the new Julia Ducournau movie, which is getting a mixed response but is by far her best IMO. Really beautiful. Tahar Rahim deserves every accolade
