My issue wasn't that the crowd was dead where I was, it was that they were too devoutly into it; like they were engaging in some perverse religious experience.

It was very off-putting.

The great American writer Gertrude Stein once noted, "Whoever said money can’t buy happiness didn’t know where to shop." And on Thursday (December 11), American billionaire Todd Boehly, chairman of Eldridge Industries and co-owner of English Premier League hopefuls Chelsea, proved that point by hiring some of the world's biggest and best-known rock stars to play a private corporate gig for just 250 people at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York.

The gig saw Guns N' Roses duo Slash and Duff McKagan, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and Ozzy Osbourne/Pearl Jam/Rolling Stones producer Andrew Watt form a one-night-only supergroup called The Dirty Bats to serve as the backing group for Anthony Kiedis, Eddie Vedder, Yungblud, Brandi Carlile and Bruno Mars.

Because nothing screams punk rock more than a bunch of millionaire rock stars taking a billionaire's money to perform for hedge fund managers, real estate agents, insurance brokers and venture capitalist bros, the all-star band played covers by The Stooges, Black Flag, Dead Boys, Nirvana, and Motorhead alongside classic rock staples by Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath, Queen and more.

Is there a number where it starts to be less impactful for us to climb on our high horse? Eddie’s only been doing corporate gigs semi-regularly since at least 2009. Seems like the “27 year old Eddie is turning in his grave” shock and awe judgments would have ceased by now.

I'm sure the good he can do with the money he was given to do this is greater than the perceived badness associated with participating. And even if he does 0 good with said money, it's hard to fault him for accepting an opportunity to play music with other legends.

I'm not gonna pretend to be above the handwringing on this topic -- it does hit me a little sour when my favorite artists take these super-exclusive corporate gigs, and it seems like a huge number of them end up doing it at some point. They must pay very well. I would hope there's some level of vetting about what kind of corporation they're performing for. I don't think they're all equal. And stepping back a bit, there’s also something about it that feels like a throwback to an older model, when composers and performers often relied on wealthy patrons to fund their work.

I will say I happen to agree that it’s kind of a sad reality that rock stars or really any art the more I think of it, would be reserved for those who have billions of dollars to pay. And it does disappoint me that my music heroes choose to play into that reality. Art should be as available and affordable as practicable. At least in my brain that deciphers between right and wrong.

Do I blame Eddie for taking a quick buck for one night’s work. I probably would have too. Doesn’t make it right, but he’s being doing that so long I might now be numb.

When PJ played the Oracle corporate gig a few years back, that was when I knew the game was up. I'm not going to lose my shit over someone wanting to be able to pay for their kids to go to the best schools or whatever, but I still felt sad that the principled band I loved growing up had become a slave to the dollar just like everyone else.
