Gladiator is a milestone in VFX history and had the same aesthetic effect on peplum that Saving Private Ryan had on war movies. To put it simply: a visually revolutionary movie. I have issues with it on a script level but it truly is astounding aesthetically.

Gladiator is not even a Ridley ‘s top 5 for me and still its groundbreaking on how it looks. I dont think i have seen again since it came out but i remember so many moments or scenes.

Havent seen the sequel.

This is fascinating to me. Regardless of what one feels about the movie as a whole, I've always found the VFX atrocious. The movie looks ancient (and not in a good way). The VFX look absolutely terrible to me. Cardboard and obvious and dated and unreal, even when I saw it in the theater.

You know way more about movies than I do. And our aesthetics are wildly different, but what is revolutionary about it? Is there an article or something you could point me toward so I can better understand?

Like, look at Jurassic Park. That movie came out 35 years ago and looks better than most VFX today. The imagery in Gladiator isn't terrible. Just, specifically, the FX. Like, Ben-Hur has better VFX and that things a million years old. The Wizard of Oz? Way better.

My view is that Gladiator shaped how those types of movies were made and how they look. Its been 25 years and it still the footprint for those movies.

I havent seen it recently so im not sure how the vfx aged but the overall look and tone of the movie is still very present.

Havent seen the sequel either.
