That’s fucking great, Rangi! Looks like you two had a blast.
I want to do that freefall thing. Gotta be as close to flying as I could ever get since I’ll never skydive or bungee.

Re: RMers with kids
Kid’s last day of her first year of real school today. She’s done so well, especially as one of the youngest. I attended their school assembly this morning and kept getting misty, hope I can keep it together at school pick up later. Just a silly, proud dad.
Of course in just a couple days, it’ll be me and her flying back to America for Xmas together, and I’ll be exhausted and at my wit’s end several times during our journey. Parenting is such a rollercoaster.

The kid’s been tired from all the end of school year ramp up, sleeping in til nearly nine, which has been glorious. This morning was fist day of summer break and she was at my bedside at 7am sharp telling me to get up. Ah well.

Heartwarming tales of parenthood there, lad. Sounds like the kid is doing great. Hell yeah.

Yeah she’s thriving, ended the year on a real high note after some mid year struggles.

My six year old informed us all that he would prefer to be addressed as Mr. Brian from now on. He is not named anything close to Brian.

Maybe he means Mr. Brain, which makes "Mr. Brian" perfectly ironic.bart wrote:My six year old informed us all that he would prefer to be addressed as Mr. Brian from now on. He is not named anything close to Brian.
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

The “I’ve got to do something” response to any request has gotten old quick.

What do you guys do when your kid simply won't listen or cooperate?

Give them space to cool down, put them in their room if needed.
If they don’t cool down and it’s after 5pm, put them to bed cuz they’re mentally and emotionally done for the day.

Re: RMers with kids
You'd think I could just put him to bed, but therein lies the rub. He goes bonkers and turns off his listening ears lately precisely because the bathroom/bathtime/bedtime sequence is nigh.spike wrote:Give them space to cool down, put them in their room if needed.

And it's not a matter of timing, he's just crossed a developmental threshold where he realizes he can try to push back on boundaries.
I swear parenting is two steps backwards sometimes.

He also keeps accusing me of trying to "scramble" him when I lay boundaries. Like, wtf? What is "scrambling" in this context?

Re: RMers with kids
We’ve run into this issue more so in the morning when getting out of the house to school or wherever. I’ve found if you rush them at all, and/or give them too many instructions consecutively, they get easily overloaded and shut down (turns off listening ears, and could be what he means by scrambling him). I have to first make sure there’s plenty of extra time built in, and then just be very consciously patient and calm. It seems to minimize the push back.

This is good advice, but waterboarding is also good advice.spike wrote:We’ve run into this issue more so in the morning when getting out of the house to school or wherever. Much to consider.
