I like the sound of this. Different direction than her past two albums, more organic? Who is drumming?

yeah, i loved that first single. Not sure who is drumming but i found out this:

¨Play Me is Gordon’s third solo album, following 2024’s The Collective, and includes one guest feature: Dave Grohl drumming on “Busy Bee.” Gordon has a renewed creativity across the LP that she partially credits to reuniting with producer Justin Raisen. “We wanted the songs to be short,” said Gordon. “We wanted to do it really fast. It’s more focused, and maybe more confident. I always kind of work off of rhythms, and I knew I wanted it to be even more beat-oriented than the last one. Justin really gets my voice and my lyrics and he understands how I work—that came forth even more on this record.”

Album is coming out march 13th

I really want it to be Steve Shelley. Kind of sounds like his style, but I seriously doubt Kim has any part of her musical future tethered to SY in any way.

Speaking of Sonic Youth, I continue to be wowed by Washing Machine (the song and the album) and the millions of ways guitars and amps behave on all these songs.

There's this churning, chugging backbone thing happening in a lot of these songs intertwined with near-melodic feedback that morphs into something close to bonafide riffing and noodling, but nothing is actually in a tuning or tempo that fully resolves. I fucking love it.

yeah, i think she is fine with both Lee and Steve but i dont see her playing with them again and i understand that, her solo career has been really solid and she is doing interesting stuff with younger people too.

Dude, im obsessed with Washing Machine!! i need to get that one in vinyl...i guess well see a very cool reissue this year?

Confession: I can't tell the difference between Lee and Thurston's guitars on WM or really any SY albums. Kind of the appeal for me with this band. I have no idea how a Lee style or a Thurston style is defined.

I've never even seen it on vinyl. That would be a cool grab.

Actually, the only vinyls from them I have are A Thousand Leaves, Rather Ripped, and The Whitey Album (!!)

they are very similar but i like Thruston more..Lee is more like a riff guy. If you listen to their solo albums you get the idea and you can later go to any SY and try to understand it more.

yeah WM has been available on vinyl, i want it! the band hinted about a reissue this year i guess with more stuff

FWIW, it's been rumoured that everyone is genuinely open to playing together as SY again, but the stumbling block is Kim not wanting to have to see or deal with Thurston's new partner at all, which he won't agree to.

I still need to check out Kim's new song.

Interesting.

I'm actually pretty good on not needing any more Sonic Youth, unless in this hypothetical they have one more Nurse-level statement in them.

I agree, it kind of felt like things may have run their course anyway, though Lee has said he didn't feel that way and he would've wanted to keep going.

The Eternal felt like they were treading water a bit, I thought it was a step down from Nurse, Rather Ripped, etc.

Yeah, exactly. Never really connected with The Eternal. It's the only album of theirs I couldn't immediately name all the songs if you asked me right now.

I felt like Rather Ripped was a big step backward too, for a long time, but recently I've come to hear it on it's terms and it has grown into one of my favorites. It's looser than I gave it credit for at the time.

Actually, Rather Ripped and Pearl Jam's ST album have a similar relationship for me in that regard.

I agree The Eternal felt like them doing what we expected from them. I dont see Kim going back to the band at all. Kinda impossible.

I also think Kim´s output since the band broke up is way more interesting than anyone else´s. I do love Thurston´s The Best Day. Thats such a good one.

Kinda glad I never got into this band. Thurston seems like such a chode.

I already love and cherish enough chode musicians. Out.

Good call, Zeb. Your post prompted me to revisit that one. Thurston's mellow acoustic record, and it's hitting the spot on a chilly January morning. I totally forgot that Beck was involved.

oh yeah of course i meant the solo otuput since the band is gone. My favorite from him might be Psychic Hearts maybe followed by The Best Day but i totally appreciated what he did on DM.

Its really interesting how Kim perceives that album tough, as if the love songs were already for her current wife. And it totally makes sense.
