How do you wish to die someday?

How do you wish to die someday? In your sleep? Surrounded by loved ones?

For me, personally, assisted suicide.

Specifically, I would like to go to a beautiful location in nature, like a meadow, accompanied by a man with a gun. After taking a moment to enjoy the flowers and look at the birds, I will stare directly into the sun. I want to finally do it. Just to see how it feels, how much it would hurt my eyes, how quickly I really would go blind. Mostly, I just want to know what the sun looks like. And then, either at my signal or when my screams of agony and pain are overwhelming, the man with the gun will shoot me.

I’d like to be old, but not too old. Late 70’s seems fair. It’s summer in Minnesota. My wife will have passed peacefully and unexpectedly during winter, shortly after having made Christmas unforgettable for the grandkids. My God, she was fucking beautiful right up to the end. I’m sitting on the back patio alone, sipping a whiskey ginger, listening to Adhesive by STP, and thinking about how lucky I’ve been and how much I miss her company. My sons and their families had been over for dinner and left just a couple hours prior. They’re doing great and my sons are close friends. There’s another grandson on the way that I’m never going to meet but who will share my name. I text with my remaining friends, making plans for a simple get-together that will never come to fruition. I gently rock myself toward death as I take in one last sunset. Is this too much to ask?
