I'm sure you don't now whether it's in a box or a bag.

I'd love to own an automatic. What's your windup routine like?

Re: wristwatches & other pieces of time
A good introduction to both watch collecting and William Gibson prose.

Who needs to actually collect watches when there's so much good content out there chronicling other people's adventures?excerpt wrote:How this happened: I'm home in Vancouver, midway through that first cup of morning coffee, in front of the computer, ready to work straight from the dream-state.
I am deep into eBay, half-awake, staring at a scan of this huge-ass Zenith diver's watch. And I am, mind you, a practicing ectomorph. I have wrists like pipestems. I am not going to get too much wear out of a watch that's actually wider than my wrist.
But a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, and I know, having already become of habitué of eBay's Clocks, Timepieces: Wrist Watches, that the movement in this particular Zenith is the very one Rolex installs in the big-ticket Daytona. Making this both a precision timepiece and possibly an undervalued one - the identical thing having sold on eBay, the week before, albeit in better cosmetic condition, for around two grand.

I was gifted a Seiko chronograph for my work anniversary. This brings my watch count to three, which basically makes me a collector now.

Wow. I don’t even have a watch anymore.
No, that’s wrong. I do have a pocketwatch owned my my great-grandfather that my grandmother gave me before she passed away. She told me not to tell anybody so I assume there were other family members that may have been interested.

Re: wristwatches & other pieces of time
Don't get me wrong...I'm not actively seeking to own a million watches. I just kind of fell into all of these time pieces.
Watch #1: Coros fitness watch. Garmin-adjacent. Won in a raffle. I used it daily until I realized it made me look like a spy kid unless I'm actively training for something. Still wear it some on casual days but now use it mostly for running and sleep tracking.
Watch #2: Some really stylish looking Hong Kong brand that keeps very good time. It's got a leather band and looks like a field watch. I bought it for $20 at a pawn shop when I started getting interested in watches. I just wanted something that I could wear on different occasions and at work.
Watch #3: This recent Seiko Chrono. Gifted to me and will probably wear it at work often. It has a stainless steel case and band, looks professional, and so far has proven to be very precise. Good watch to learn "hacking seconds" and fall in love with the minutiae of horology.
Three watches for $20. Not a bad stroke of luck over the last year.

Might be fun to do some research on this watch. Sounds like a treasure.wease wrote:I do have a pocketwatch owned my my great-grandfather that my grandmother gave me before she passed away. She told me not to tell anybody so I assume there were other family members that may have been interested.

Re: wristwatches & other pieces of time
There is a solution to this. Cut the power to the kitchen right at 12 a.m. Then it will flash 12 a.m. exactly on each of them. Just hit "set time" on each then enter. They'll stay at that time as long as you don't select time movement up or down.blueviper wrote:Ours too! Re: wristwatches & other pieces of time
Currently wearing a cheapish looking field watch that I absolutely love.
The dial is black with numerical lume indecises. The hands are also the same lume, but the second hand is thin and red. There's no complications except a date window.
On the back is etched a marlboro logo. Looks like it was a marlboro miles giveaway. Quartz movement. Fitted with a forest green nato strap.
Bought it as part of a $20 mystery grab bag from a charity guild shop.

That's awesome to have something with a history like that, and Seikos are super cool. Precise, but with none of that fussy Rolex or Omega financial baggage.VinylGuy wrote:Im using an old Seiko that belonged to my grandfather. I have a Seiko chronograph that my boss gave me last year. It's the one I wear the most at work.

nice. this reminds me I need to break out my Timex weekender with a similar strap to yours, same color too. I’ve gotten so used to wearing an Apple Watch, I forgot about it, but I do love it.washing machine wrote:Currently wearing a cheapish looking field watch that I absolutely love.

Straps are the secret weapon of watch collecting, I've found.
Don't have the money to keep buying watches but want a new look? Get some new straps! Colors, textures, so many options to make a watch feel new.

Apple banked a whole product on this concept.washing machine wrote:Straps are the secret weapon of watch collecting, I've found.
