I’m enjoying the one I’m currently reading, The Rest of Our Lives by Benjamin Markovits. An easy read with a protagonist who’s marriage is not great, he’s about to be an empty nester, and he’s decided to take a road trip after dropping his daughter off to college, kind of playing it all by ear.

I also liked The Dutch House by Ann Patchett. I did audio for the first half of that one because it’s read by Woody from Toy Story.

A few I’ve read in the last 18 months that I’ve also liked:

The Safekeep by Yael van der Wouden
Writers and Lovers by Lily King
The Guest by Emma Cline
Big Swiss by Jen Beagin
North Woods by Daniel Mason

Thanks dad. The only one of those i've read is The World According to Garp. Lonesome Dove is on my list, and I figure I'll at least try Infinite Jest at some point.

40/60 chance I'll finish this. The intro is fun as hell, but this world will either draw me in or lose me fast. Feels Jonathon Lethem adjacent. Sci-Fi too smart for it's own good, but the prose so far isn't as self-serious as Lethem.

Pretty sure I'll be finishing it.

The structure is inventive. Heard it compared to Nabokov's Pale Fire, but I haven't read that.

The narrator has designated himself a scholar of an obscure sci-fi writing collective (who meet at his house). You get to know the other characters through their stories, which are anthologized within the story. Narrator is outside looking in, desperately wishing for an invite into the collective.

Sort of like what Bolano was doing with Juan Garcia Madero in Savage Detectives?

There's geek fandom, critique of publishing, interpersonal drama, and some sci-fi world building in here.

I like it. This is my second book dealing with that near future cyberpunk setting. I read Snow Crash before this one. While it is good I feel Gibson is doing it better.
