I took my youngest son on a weeklong road trip when he was 12. There are at least half a dozen moments during the trip burned indelibly in my mind that could qualify for this thread. I know it’s a little fucked up since my wife and other son weren’t with us, but it was the happiest week of my life. The moment that sticks out the most, though, was one afternoon we were in the vrbo taking a break, and he was watching Toy Story for the millionth time. I was at the table behind where he was sat on the couch, and the realization that that era of my life was on the cusp of ending hit me so hard. I was aware that I was with my best friend, and I knew in a year that person would be gone. I was crying like Holden Caulfield watching Phoebe on the carousel.

1 on 1 time with kids is the best, especially when you can surrender yourself to outside distractions to just be present in the moment.

Yes, this is almost what I meant. He’s still with us and still awesome (not a teenage terror), but he’s self-conscious now in a way he wasn’t then. He doesn’t wear Metallica shirts anymore like he did every day of that trip. He’s just more aware of the world than he was then.

Can’t agree with anyone saying the day a child was born was the happiest day of their life. Those days have led to all my happiest days, but being in a hospital, seeing the love of my life in excruciating pain, various monitors making vaguely scary noises, not sleeping, nurses coming in and out to check who knows what, feeling completely unprepared…I had a few hours of content peace with the second one, but neither of those days would I want to go back and relive.
