Used programmed drums for Up then hired hands thereafter.
Not quite true, they used session drummers on Up too:
R.E.M. used session drummers such as Joey Waronker and Barrett Martin while also utilizing drum machines.

I actually know this thanks to the R U Talkin' REM Re: Me? podcast lol

I put too much stock in the press at the time. I promise this won’t do to R.E.M. what learning Duane Allman came up with the Layla riff did to my view of Clapton.

Up is really good. Lotus and Suspicion are two of my favorite REM songs.

I also remember being told by the press, Tabitha Soren maybe? that they were using a drum machine for the album. Probably true but it wasn’t the whole story.

Yeah, and agreed on Up. I saw them for the first time on that tour as well. I can name check like half that album as belonging with my favorite REM tracks. Then again, I am not known for my brevity when it comes to that.

it was heavily advertised that they were recording without a new drummer yes, mostly because they wrote the music that way.

Well, they're playing.

Vedder dodged the question of whether the band has already found a new drummer, in a manner that may raise fans’ eyebrows. “ If I were to say anything,” he said, “I think we’d wanna have a band discussion about what we’d wanna say or who would be the messenger or whatever.”

But Vedder did make it clear that he and the other members of Pearl Jam are currently playing together, and feeling open to evolution, baby. “We’re in the lab, we’re woodshedding, excited,” he said. “It’s cool to think of change. As much as we’d like to have done it the way we did it forever — and we’ll still be able to do that thing — I think we’re all just excited for the future.”

I get so tired of Pearl Jam's constant evasion of literal language in just giving the fans any news

Patience, they’ve only been operating this way for 36 years.

Yeah, it’s annoyed me for a long time. It’s like a version of hazing - baiting us all into seemingly whiny entitled fans. I’ll admit that might be the case for me, but we made it through the other side of the Backspacer/Lightning Bolt era and the resulting 6.5 year tour in support. Perhaps we are entitled to something!

I'll admit, it's nice to be at a point where I'm thinking the next album might be pretty good

I find the radio silence and/or cryptic quotes to be sort of charming in this day and age.

Thats mostly Ed. J

Jeff and Stone are super direct and refreshing in the way they speak about things. I love Jeff´s podcasts, his work ethics and views inspired me on how to keep making stuff.

While in Seattle over the holidays, I was told by someone mildly in the know that they were “having a hard time finding a drummer”

For whatever that’s worth

This is probably coincendence, but Krusen was suppose to do some sort of Unified Theory tour this month. But he dropped out of 'scheduling conflicts'.......

Still think Matt Chamberlain is the front runner, with Josh Freese and perhaps Perkins.

As much as I want to, I don't see Josh Freese stepping in... I saw him with NIN the other night (infuckingcredible) and while I love him as a player, unless he's looking for a quiet retirement gig, Pearl Jam is not his next stop. Perkins makes the most sense to me given where he is in his career and his style.

Should we have a guess the date for the announcement of the new drummer?
