Friends are telling me he was really good at Outside Lands this weekend. What’s a good album for a new listener?

Re: Sturgill Simpson
I checked out Sound and Fury and then Metamodern Sounds after perusing this thread. This guy is interesting for sure. Metamodern Sounds is like a warm ear blanket. I could do without all the drug references but whatever.
Sound and Fury is something else. I can't tell whether Metamodern Sounds is the costume and Sound and Fury is the band he really wanted to be or if it's the other way around. Pretty wild mood swings. Very fun.

I think Sound and Fury was a one-off thing, though I wouldn't mind if he stayed with it.

Anyway I'm wearing out Sound and Fury. Those opening three or four songs are great. I think I'll nominate Sturgill for Kentucky Colonel if he's not one already.

I wanted to hear an interview from the Sound and Fury era and this story in the middle of the interview, while not related to the art at all, was certainly interesting.

New record March 13. Looks like maybe no digital release, physical media only. Sounds about right for him.

Maybe up on YouTube now. I’m a wait until you have the CD listener so I don’t know if it’s the album or a recording of Sturgill saying “y’all see now this is what’s wrong with America today. No patience.” Over and over.

I quite like it. Seems like an extension of the live show somehow, if that makes sense. Don’t Let Go is instantly a classic, it sounds like something that would’ve fit perfectly on Metamodern. Situation is MDMA approved. The record sounds great and the band is fantastic.
It’s got some barn burners, some funky shit and some classics. I will not miss him this tour.

Re: Sturgill Simpson
First impressions:
1) the band is excellent at this funky mood.
2) lyrically this record is largely forgettable.
3) the number of times a guitar lead was replaced with saxophone is immeasurably disappointing to me. I hate saxophone anyway, but in the context of this band, that’s like putting your 4th string players in. Nobody wins.

Second impression
1) the band really kicks ass on this record. Special recognition to the bass player.
2) other impressions aren’t much changed, but the strength of the band is overwhelming them.
