You know, I’m not that into tribute albums, BUT the label putting out this collection are also releasing a 7’’ that includes a demo of “The Last Three Human Words” which I’m fairly certain is previously unreleased.

Nice!

Tribute albums can be a bit hit or miss but Lenderman doing Molina is always going to be a bullseye.

There’s this beauty of a song called “The Saddest Place on Earth” that was released a few months ago on the Patreon that I’ve been digging today. It’s a demo, but there a couple of backing tracks, so it sounds more produced than a bunch of other songs they’ve put out.
The saddest place on earth
Was that look in your eyes
When you looked out at the night
And faced away from your life
Said i can't come home baby

That's not the kind of look
That tells only the truth
It says you always knew
But you might not make it through

You say everyone's ghost
Has tried facing this road
Tried to follow the dark
Back to their living hearts
But you're not coming home baby

I saw all that old hurt
Buried in the saddest place on the earth
You're not coming home, baby

On The Watch podcast earlier this week, Chris Ryan read out the title of the latest episode of Task, which was called (seriously) “Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a river.” Andy Greenwald responded, “Are you sure that’s not a Songs:Ohia song?” I felt seen.

Hard to Love a Man is getting its first-ever vinyl reissue in February, including a handful of demos.

I’m very, very intrigued by this. A documentary about Jason’s life that only includes interviews with people who knew Jason before he broke into the music business. Hoping it plays somewhere near me:

Listening to the bonus tracks on the Hard to Love a Man reissue that's out today now.

First one is a solo demo version of 31 Seasons, and there's a crow in the background. Molina-core.

The next track is a full-band version of One Thin Dime (elsewhere called East St. Louis Blues) from the Black Ram sessions. Awesome.

Finally, there's a new full-band version of Lonesome Valley. More organs up front than the version on Sojourner. Feels brighter. Love it.

Wish we still had this man with us. Was looking through a box of old stuff a few weeks ago and found my one and only Molina ticket stub, signed by the great man himself. What a treasure.
