"Iron & Wine is excited to ring in the new year with the release of Archive Series Volume No. 1. Pulled from tapes found in the back corners of closets and dusty shoe boxes, this is the first in a series of releases - songs long neglected, but never forgotten. With the Archive Series, Sam Beam (Iron & Wine) will be gathering otherwise unreleased home recordings, covers, and live sets from his entire career and releasing them on his own label, Black Cricket Recording Co.

The songs on Volume No. 1 came to life at the same time as those selected for The Creek Drank the Cradle. The songs on Creek were only 11 of the many performed and recorded by Iron & Wine at home on a 4-track cassette. While some of this material has been widely bootlegged, it has never received a widespread or proper release until now."

Great bump!

I just downloaded the archives. I'm going to give it a listen before I decide on the LP (although I'll probably wait until the price goes down).

I have it and I dig it.

Iron and Wine is tough for me to listen to consistently. Not that it isn't good. Beam is a great song writer. It just makes me sleepy.

Actually the last time I saw I+W I was really, really bored. It was a lot of boring extended folk jams. For me, I+W is about the lyrics, not the music, but this was especially bad because they weren't even good jam sessions. FTR this was on the Shephard's Dog tour at FSU, which is his alma matter.

Rad!

I saw Band of Horses with My Morning Jacket. I'd love to see BoH by themselves.

Will def check this out. I'm always interested when people cover Talking Heads songs. Like how they translate.

The two songs that were put out for Record Store Day are legit. Track them down if you can; here's a live version of one of them:

I only listened to the first half of the new LP today, but I really, really liked it.

Saw Sam on Monday - I feel like I gush about most shows I go to but this was maybe the most reverential concert audience I've ever been part of. Seemed like we were all hanging on every word and every note. Probably because he hasn't been here since 2018 - I personally hadn't seen him since 2003. It was definitely one of those shows where it had been awhile and it was sometimes hard to accept that the voice I'd heard so many times through my speakers and headphones was now coming directly out of his face on stage in front of me. :nice:

It's so good.

Very way too early contender for Album of the Year, for me.

FWIW that post was from 2017 and was about Beast Epic.

I haven’t listened to the new one but I recently was able to pick up The Archive Series Vol. 6 at a really good used price; I didn’t even know this came out in 2024. Needed to complete my Archive collection.

Epic Beast isn't as good as the new one.

He is so pure as a performer. Immediate rapport with the crowd, even when he flubbed a note or lyric it was still straight up magic. And his voice, oh his voice.

What are the odds he'll do a tour for the 20th anniversary of Shepherd's Dog next year where he plays the whole album every night?

I've only listed to roses off the newest one but I don't like the direction Sam has gone in to abandon any sense of tension in his music

I sort of understand what you're saying but maybe that tension was just a byproduct of making his mark with soft, slow acoustic jams. His approach to songwriting has certainly become grander and more sophisticated over the years, and I welcome it because I feel like we're seeing the whole artist now rather than simply what he could initially make with the tools he had. Almost like going from AM to FM.
