this one’s more pj adjacent, but here goes…

I’m reading a book called, I See You’ve Called In Sick. It’s about a middle aged man, who works as an obituary writer for a newspaper in NYC.

One night, he gets drunk and publishes his own obit, much to the dismay of his employer, who puts him on administrative leave while they figure out what to do.

At one point, he has to come in and meet with HR, and his boss, and the head of HR is named Lenny.

Just kidding…it’s Beth Leibling.

when she walks in the room, the writer begins by lamenting 'Ohhhhhh Bethhhhh'

to which she objects: 'don't use my name like that'

and he replies

"no, no, I wasn't saying 'Oh Beth' I was saying 'Ohhhhhhhhh darrrghghhbbhbbhhh' ... it's a lyric to a pearl jam song, have you seen unplugged?

to which she replied

'oh yes, i have seen that performance. i love the way the outtro ends' so smooth. 'ohhhhhhh darrrghghhbbhbbhhh'. now let's talk about your firing'

alright, same author, different book. this one - Talk to Me - came out in 2019, I think. less than 20 pages into the book and there’s a full-on PJ, EV, Jill…and Beth mention.

Pulled up next to a mustang with heavy tinted windows the other Sunday. The driver was absolutely belting out Black. Could hear it through his closed windows and mine. Right at the “hope you’ll have a beautiful life” part and he fully, FULLY committed to the “why can’t it be miiiine” part. Truly astonishing. The song still hits in anno domine 2026.
