It's just fun. And they make you care about the characters. It's a super flawed movie with very little stakes when you really look at it. But Gosling and that puppet can cook! The themes are relatable and the visuals are strong. It's just a great time at the movies.

I've seen this critique elsewhere. Is it the lack of scenes on earth detailing the impact of the sun's cooling or the knowledge their mission will likely be a success? If it's the latter, you could make the same critique for most blockbuster films.

I've seen this critique elsewhere. Is it the lack of scenes on earth detailing the impact of the sun's cooling or the knowledge their mission will likely be a success? If it's the latter, you could make the same critique for most blockbuster films.

Obviously the stakes for humanity are huge! I just mean for Grace. There's a weird logic hole about his not being able to return. They say it's a fuel issue but he's literally going to a place where he can collect more fuel!

It's also that Rocky can do anything. He's kind of a superhero in that regard and it isn't until his life is in jeopardy that the movie feels like it's delivering on the stakes in any real way, to me.

I also think the structure, the flashback-ing throughout, is a disservice. I actually think the stakes are higher and Grace as a character is in doubt much more of it's a linear narrative. But that's not what the movie is, so that's just me having a preference, not a real knock on the movie.

Again, this is nitpicking and certainly not any kind of deal breaker. I really loved the movie and want to watch it again and again and again!

Of course, a lot of other movies, especially blockbuster/space movies, have the same/similar issues (to varying degrees). So it's not a unique criticism of this film, but it is still a valid criticism.

I think I just had the wrong expectations going in. They market it as this epic movie called PROJECT HAIL MARY about a desperate attempt to save the world, when it's really just a nice little story about a boy and his pet rock.
