I made a trip to the record store for Play Me. I really like the run of songs from No Hands thru Busy Bee.

At this point she's pretty much married to beat driven music, but there's a real song-driven shine to this one that I didn't get from the previous two albums.

Happy release day, everyone.

I listened once but couldnt pay attention really ; but yes its very beat driven but there is more melody and its not as closed and repetitive as the last one.

I do need a proper listen

Listened yesterday and yes, i like this one. It feels a more cohesive mix between SY and her last solo album, is still very beat driven and she sings like she is rapping but there is more space in the songs, its not as claustrophobic as the last one.

I love Play Me, No Hands, Dirty Tech, Not Today, Busy Bee and Post Empire.

Subcon is also growing...that beat is nuts. I can see this album being wild live.

The title track on Play Me is dada poetry, mining the algorithms to great effect. This is where Side2Side left off.

Rich popular girl
Villain mode
Jazz in the background
Chillin' after work
After-school club
Ready for spring
Afternoon
All the feels, chill vibes, feel free

Loving this album.

Listening to Experimental Jet Set today. I love this record. It sits in a weird spot in their career. They're waist deep in major label territory at this point, but these songs are much more polarizing than anything on Goo or Dirty. Bone, Skink, Starfield Road, Screaming Skull...

Only thing I'd complain about is the lack of Lee songs, but if you squint hard enough you can pretend that Self Obsessed and Sexxee is his.

Some of the heaviest Steve Shelley drumming on this album, btw.

Androgynous Mind is a banger. That is all. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

I never saw SY live but I did see the Lee Renaldo Band in 2012 at a 500 capacity venue from the front row. Shelley's drumming was mesmerising.

can't agree more, my favorite SY album and as you may have guessed my entry into their world, such a great album. Not that they have any bad ones really.
Came in following nirvana's praise and to me this album is still their "grungiest", love the sound of it. great playing on there too, they definitely added something to the 90's sound with one.

Spot on.

I feel like it's gotten a bad rap amongst the fans, historically? Maybe because it's not quite their earlier stuff and their later jammy stuff wasn't fully developed yet?

Right and I think it may simply be a case of it not repeating goo or dirty which were very well received.

Its one of my favs as well. Their whole Geffen years are excellent for me, but those first 4 just wow.

I think at the time it was seen as a pop intent for them? Shorter songs, Butch Vig producing again, Kathleen Hanna being in the Bull In The Heather video....

Not sure, but that was my idea back in the day when SY purists hated it with passion.
