Re: RMers with kids
In the midst of the kid’s two week term break, though after the long holiday weekend, today is the first proper day of just the two of us.
We had a busy morning taking the dogs to the vet, then I had to get the guys cleaning out our gutters set up, but otherwise it’s just been us hanging out and she’s been really great. The too frequent requests for food and complaints of boredom have been replaced by a more mature and self sufficient kid who’s been quietly doing self play for a couple hours now. If this is how it’s going to be most of the time now, I may actually start looking forward to these holiday breaks as relaxing and not a slowly building exercise in parental exhaustion.
I’m no fool, I fully expect her to be more of a handful tomorrow, but I shall enjoy the moment.

Re: RMers with kids
Just got back from a weekend I've been waiting for for years. First camping trip with my kiddo.
This was a Cub scout thing on a ranch, scheduled meals at a dining hall and activities all day. Not my ideal context for a camp trip, but great to get him some exposure. My wife came along and I thought she'd hate it, but super happy to report that everybody was enjoying it. It was a good warm up for a more freeform camping experience sometime in the future. Hopefully before it gets too hot.
You really can't beat seeing kids run around in open spaces while sipping a cup of coffee and turning the phone off.

We’re vacationing by the ocean and took the kid to a killer whale museum, saw a seal in the water today, a bunch of birds and fish, and are going on a sea life spotting board tour tomorrow. She’s loving it and it’s great but oh my lord the endless questions, of which some are awesome but many are just wtf.

Re: RMers with kids
Can you clarify "killer whale museum" ? Was this an especially awesome regular whale museum, or was this specifically an orca museum?
In any case, this sounds like an epic trip.

Haha, it’s orcas. There was a pod that hung around here in the old whaling days that helped the whalers herd whales into the bay for capture. Wild stuff.

My six year old has some chronic constipation issues that mean she sometimes can’t control her bowels and it just comes. So, whenever she’s fluffing around and drops ass, I know it’s coming and I ask her to get to the can. Of course, every time she fights me on it, then like clockwork, poops herself within twenty minutes. So fucking annoying.

My youngest finishes daycare at the end of the month. We've had a kid there for almost nine straight years. It will be bittersweet when say goodbye.

Yeah but you won’t have that monthly expense anymore, either.

Well, sure. I'll miss the people. We still have after school care and summer camps to pay for, so it's not like the cost completely goes away. It will certainly nice to have one location for drop off and pick up again. That's like 30-45 minutes back to our day.

We spent three days in Sydney, and both there and back the kid has been complaining of jet lag. It’s an hour flight in the same time zone.

my oldest graduates from high school on thursday. his give-a-shitter broke about 4 months ago. he's been getting up early and watching episodes of series that he hasn't seen before (the wire, sopranos, game of thrones) before going to class. he wants to do the same with movies before he leaves for college. he may end up looking like chris farley in that hibernol commercial after everything is said and done.
