the grief never goes away you just learn how to deal with it better

you and your mother are definitely too young to go through this. instead of wondering what you could have done differently concentrate on all the wonderful times you had

Great advice. I’d add to also come to terms with/accept that losing a parent can fundamentally change you and your outlook on life.

But don’t let it turn you into asshole. I narrowly avoided that; my wife once observed that I’d become a lot angrier after my dad passed.

Spoke to mum over the weekend and she told me that my dad had taken a fall tripping over his oxygen tube. Said he had a bit of a sore shoulder - so she'd given him some paracetamol and Voltaren to take care of it. Forward to last night - I finished training and on the way out of class I heard my phone ringing in my bag. It was my brother-in-law calling from the hospital. Dad went to the emergency room in the morning. Turns out he has a broken collarbone and the tested his oxygen levels - which were down to 65%. Did other tests - apparently there's a fair bit of fluid around one lung - his heart is continuing to deteriorate. He's going to be kept in for a few days at least - maybe get sent to respite care till his break heals. Fuck!

Had a call from my dad this morning. He sounded bright and cheerful - so that was good. He said pain was minimal, and they've got is oxygen levels back up to 85% - which is where it was sitting before he went in, and they're getting rid of the fluid around his lung. He'll be going into respite care for a few weeks while his collarbone heals and they'll continue to treat the other issues. Turns out the fall was a good thing as the oxygen levels and lung fluid would have presented themselves soon enough and then mum and dad would have had to pay for the care, but because of the fall ACC (government department) is covering all the costs.
