Johnny Guitar is the epitome of why I hate Matt Cameron songs. What he thinks of as musical left turns are actually just cobbled together non sequitors. His lyrics are almost always shite. Like high school poetry notebook shite. Too cerebral to be fun, too wooden to be art. Just shite. An abomination (he screamed into the void).

Or Ed just decided to take the bullet for Matt because otherwise the band would have had to fire him.wease wrote:Ed wrote these lyrics, not Matt.lvc wrote:Johnny Guitar is the epitome of why I hate Matt Cameron songs. Seriously though I thought I read a song credit that was just Matt and Stone. I had no idea Matt’s songwriting woes were contagious.

What is a "non sequitor" about "Johnny Guitar" harmonically, rhythmically, or whatever?lvc wrote:Johnny Guitar is the epitome of why I hate Matt Cameron songs. What he thinks of as musical left turns are actually just cobbled together non sequitors.

Because save for some syncopation "Johnny Guitar" is super straightforward.
Admittedly cringy lyrics notwithstanding, it's also the one Backspacer song I look back fondly on, so it gets my vote

Johnny Guitar is my favorite song on Backspacer and could be in my top 20 PJ tunes, it's definitely one of my favorites. The very interesting and sharp chords at the beginning are one of the best intros they've done and sets the mood perfectly, for a wonderfully askew rocker and while Eddie may sing with tongue in cheek, I still think there's some deeper sincerity in his performance, which elevates the song.
A vote for Johnny!
