Re: MC2-14: Comes Then Goes vs Bushleaguer
Bu$hleaguer is a cool groove, and a song that is better in context. I love it in Riot Act and never skip it when listening to the album. But I also never want listen to it on its own. I never seek it out removed from the album experience.
Comes Then Goes is basically the opposite. A stunning portrait that might be better out of context. It certainly works on the album but it also really works on its own.

100% disagree. To me they occupy the mushy middle. They’re not concrete nor to they hit anything universal. They just kind of float without landing.Buby wrote:Comes Then Goes = Top 10 PJ lyrics

This matchup is testing my feeling that I will never vote for a PRAMG song over a pre-PRAMG song. But it's holding steady for now.

"Comes The Goes" contains the lines:Buby wrote:Comes Then Goes = Top 10 PJ lyrics
Sadness comes, with it a sea of tears
Would some love be best had it not appeared?
which to me really highlight the weaknesses of Ed's writing; the clunky and labored construction, the awkward syntax, the clichéd imagery (wow, sea of tears, very original).
It is also extremely boring as a piece of music, IMO
"Bushleaguer" isn't great but the "blackout weaves its way..." part wins it for me

Re: MC2-14: Comes Then Goes vs Bushleaguer
I think Eddie started moving in the direction of being a very direct lyricist with the self-titled album, and Comes Then Goes is a sort of standard manner of his writing style as it evolved.
Blackout weaves its way through the city is not a line Eddie would write post-RA. I think this is the genesis of a lot of folk’s issues, or maybe a symptom of it, concerning their output since RA. It just became more direct and obvious, sometimes for good and sometimes not.

Bushleaguer, pretty easily.
Yes, Ed's spoken word bits are very bad, but the rest is great.

But
Are you stuck in the middle
A spectral invisible ghost
I'm here juxtaposed
Like images of angels in the snow
Our courage melts away, it comes then goes
and
Divisions came and troubles multiplied
Incisions made by scalpel blades of time
and
Thought you found a game where you could win
Yeah, it's all vivisection in the end
and
Evidence in the echoes of your mind
Leads to me to believe we missed the signs
and
The Queen of Collections took your time
Sadness comes 'cause some of it was mine
are all genuinely great lyrics. There has been plenty of poetic moments since Riot Act, but I agree that since ST Eddie's writing has been pretty direct. But that's defined his writing for most of his career.

Very very nodding my head to this. I've never had this thought myself, but should have.liebzz wrote:Blackout weaves its way through the city is not a line Eddie would write post-RA. Re: MC2-14: Comes Then Goes vs Bushleaguer
i mean a song like present tense is direct and obvious, too. this isnt wrong per se. Eddie has always had these two modes. the directness is maybe forward a bit more often from ST forward, but that balance, even within songs, is a hallmark of Ed’s writingJaeti wrote:Very very nodding my head to this. and blackout is a great lyric, but the lyrics surrounding it are rough.
