I know, I'm just answering to the "Don't you like Stone?" thing. Perfectly easy to like Stone and hate LTRP.

Very good song and one of the best songs on the album. Interesting to note that this song seems to be getting the most airplay (besides the two singles) so knowing PJ that's a sure fire sign it won't be a single

I get that. But I think that song's so much fun. Why do you hate Stone Gossard so much, Stip? Did he run over your dog or something?
I think LTRP is OK, but it's hardly an example of Stone at the top of his game.
Well, of course. But Stip also hates Bayleaf and Moonlander. And there-in lies the joke I was making. Emphasized further by the dog comment. For those playing along at home.

I liked a few of the moonlander songs i've heard. I just never cared enough to listen to the whole album. I already like it more than bayleaf.

Jesus, man. Did Gossard put a banana in your tailpipe or what? Woof!

For the record, I think Let the Record Play is probably worse than anything on Bayleaf and Moonlander. But I still like it more than Swallowed Whole.

With into the Wild, I loved the theme of the music (hated the movie) and Ed is a great singer and lyricist obviously however, I thought the music itself wasn't very strong. As a Pearl Jam fan, I look to Gossard/Ament for the strongest musicianship. I thought, bring Jeff or even Mike on board with Into the WIld and you have something miles above musically. With Swallowed WHole it feels to me that this is what they did. Its a level above anything on ITW and its incredible!

Solid 4 star song.
Everyone keeps talking about an Into The Wild feel to this, but much of Vedders "solo", "acoustic" etc. songs can fit this mold. If "Small Town" was written today, many would be connecting that song to that movie, I reckon..

I agree. Or "Off He Goes", "Long Road", etc. etc. Everything with Ed and an acoustic guitar apparently doesn't belong on a Pearl Jam album now.

Swallowed Whole is a lot less incongruous than Just Breathe, The End or Future Days.

I wonder why those songs get nailed and TMW doesn't.

I'm happy to stand up and nail Thumbing My Way - I find it only slightly less dull than Future Days.

Thinking about what makes those songs different in my mind, all I can come up with is that TMW feels more like a true band performance instead of an Ed solo performance that the band is merely adding some color to.

I dunno. Sometimes it feels like a person's opinion (on whether a song is "a true band performance" or not) will only depend on whether they really like it. To take "Sleeping By Myself" as an example: some of us believe it totally belongs on Lightning Bolt (because we really like it), while others of us think it's an "Ed solo song" that has no place on the record (because we don't like it). The only difference, though, is that one groups likes it, the other doesn't. It's the same song with the same performance. "Just Breathe" and "The End" (or even FD) have more minimal band participation, but the range of opinions on them is the same.

Well, I like "The End" quite a lot, and I like "Just Breathe" just fine, so I don't know that that applies.

Is "No More" a Pearl Jam song?

it was listed on itunes as an eddie vedder song, so no.

I happen to like most of the 'ed solo songs', and even Thumbing My Way (which is okay) I feel belongs on Riot Act. I guess I've never felt like these songs weren't proper pearl jam songs. Nightswimming is just half the band, after all I guess that's twice as many as the end, but still.

Is the band doing more on Thumbing My Way than they are in Just Breathe or Future Days? Certainly it's less than SBM.
