Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power

If it were possible for Pantera to get even heavier, here we go. I think the approach works really well in the first half of the album, and I found myself getting into Mouth for War, Walk, and This Love in particular, but all of it in the first half is really good, a sort of Sgt. Pepper/Pet Sounds heavy metal upping of the ante on heaviness with Metallica’s Black Album. The issue is that over 52 minutes and not much variety, the sound get exhausting. Probably for metal heads this is no problem, but it starts to feel too samey. A 30 minute album of this would probably have been ideal for me.

Buckethead - Bucketheadland

Man, I hated this album. Now, Buckethead is an incredibly talented guitarist, and I wouldn’t take that away from him - hell, I own Buckethead albums, but this maniacal concept doesn’t didn’t stick with me. It came off as random and disjointed, sort of like some wild stream of consciousness that is impossible to follow. I can only go with the song with excellent guitar and bass.

Pantera was a band i really cared as a kid but i was more into the hits than a whole album.

KISS - Revenge

The opening track on this album, Unholy, reveals a ton of promise for this album. A bit heavier and more focused, it seemed that perhaps KISS was a bit less of a circus. That was pretty short-lived, as the remainder of the album largely falls off from here. The only other track that really appealed to me was Carr Jam 1981, which was a tribute to the recently deceased drummer. It plays like a Moby Dick of a track for him and I am glad they found it and fit it into this.

Sade - Love Deluxe

At her best in albums past, Sade’s pull was as much about vocals as the jazz happening around those vocals. Smooth and powerful all at once. This album seems more content living on those vocals, and the smooth jazz vibe a little too monotonous. The hits are recognizable, but after a while it just kind of lulls you into boredom. But No Ordinary Love and Bullet Proof Soul are both pretty good.

Up Next: Sade - Love Deluxe

This was supposed to be a rebound album for them. The tour to support it dusted off a lot of deep cut hard tracks from the early albums. But, grunge was already building and both the album and tour fizzled into nothing. Prob my favorite show of theirs that I saw, but I was sick às a dog with some stomach bug and couldn’t stay out of the bathroom.

This is also very difficult for me to wrap my head around, Easy seems like the band's biggest hit by a massive margin.

It hit number 1 on the Australian charts and was played endlessly on the radio for years thereafter.

Maybe it made less of a dent in the states?

And Easy did not really hit here:

"Easy" was originally issued on December 29, 1992, as a double A-side single with "Be Aggressive". The double A-side peaked at No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart, becoming the band's highest-charting UK hit, and No. 5 on the Irish Singles Chart. "Easy" also reached No. 1 in Australia for two weeks in May 1993 and peaked within the top five on the charts of Belgium, Finland, Iceland, Ireland and Norway. In the United States, the song was Faith No More's last single to appear on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 58 in April 1993. It was later included on the European version of their album Angel Dust.

Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes

Back in college, I had a close friend who was a huge Tori Amos zealot. Back then, I didn’t have the sort of patience for her music - but it was less a judgment on her music than it was a judgment on me. Times have changed, and so this is really my first go at this since. The first half of this album really struck me, and frankly busted my impression of years ago. Crucify, Girl, Silent All These Years, Precious Things, and Happy Phantom are all fantastic and well varied. They are the weight of this album as well. I am less drawn to the piano ballads still, but I was fairly floored by that collection alone. I can’t promise I am completely sold, but this album gave some hope of being a bit less closed off. Year in Your Hand and Little Earthquakes are worth the mention for the second half as well. In fact, it’s by a hair that the title track isn’t at the top for me. Precious Things takes it for me though. Wait! Changed my mind and Little Earthquakes takes it.

Yeah, it seems it was more of a international single but still very surprising to hear after all this time
