What are you currently reading?

I just finished this this morning. You hear the author on The Ringer? That was my intro a couple weeks ago. Did She Rides Shotgun in a couple days, then this one. Have the new sequel on hold at the library. Super page turner.

I’m like 50 pages into the sequel A Violent Masterpiece and it is way more lurid and seedy. We’ll see how this goes, but all the darkness from the first book is dialed up to 11.

reading this as well. Had never heard of him until he was on that ringer podcast and wanted to check it out. I’m about 250 pages in. It’s not bad.

…has gotten really great at the halfway point. It’s way more hopeless and nihilistic than the first one, but just as readable.

While I enjoyed it, I think the first one was better overall. This one really goes off the rails near the end, and the main characters feel more formulaic. Fun read, but pretty shark jumping.

Oh so you read this first? It’s a direct sequel to Everybody Knows, though for some reason they’re not marketing it as such. Feels like there will probably be a third as well?

After reading Everybody Knows and She Rides Shotgun, I was thinking he’s the next James Ellroy. But here he leaned too hard on the cartoonishly lurid as the plot got away from him.

Both are such good reads. KC is essential, but I think Medium Raw is the more overall rewarding book. But they really are a perfect pairing.

I just finished Manhattan Beach by Jennifer Egan. I really loved it. The first 2/3 of the book are about perfect. It starts to meander and stumble a bit in the final third, but overall I would recommend it.

Ah. Yes, a lot of the baddies in AVM are in the background of EK, and the BOB character in AVM is one of the primary characters (to the extent it makes their reappearance in AVM feel kind of slight).
