we're planning our trip again that was interrupted by the MIL death in march...we've currently booked Dublin for 4 weeks and then off to Liverpool and Manchester for a week or so and then train it up to Scotland for about 2 more weeks..hopefully the FIL doesn't fall and break his head..fingers crossed

We leave for Greece/Egypt on Tuesday after our planned trip to Rio was interrupted by my mom’s death while we waited for our connecting flight last month. I felt bad having the thought, “I hope my dad can hold it together for a couple of weeks now.” Glad my mind isn’t the only one like this.

Greece/Egypt trip was a great success and no one in my family died while we were gone. Cairo is the craziest place I’ve ever been in my life.

I just came back from Greece myself. Did 4 nights in Athens and then 4 nights in Santorini (wife's choice). Loved both. Santorini wasn't as busy as people said it would be. I thought Athens was great. Incredible food everywhere and loved walking around the city. We took an 8-year-old who loved it.

I just came back from Greece myself. Did 4 nights in Athens and then 4 nights in Santorini (wife's choice). Loved both. Santorini wasn't as busy as people said it would be. I thought Athens was great. Incredible food everywhere and loved walking around the city. We took an 8-year-old who loved it.

We had 3 days at each stop - Athens, Santorini, Naxos, and Giza.
We stayed in the Monastiraki neighborhood in Athens. Our room had an incredible view of the Acropolis. My favorite thing we did in Athens was hike up Mt. Lycabettus. My kids had fun recreating the iconic photo of Giannis up there. We stayed in Fira on Santorini, and the best thing we did there or anywhere in Greece was the 6 mile hike to Oia. I agree, it wasn’t crowded at all. There was a 20 minute line for the one staircase with the two blue domes, but otherwise it felt almost empty. Naxos didn’t have the highs of Athens or Santorini, but it was like the batter who hits for average in that it was consistently t enjoyable. I think it had the best food, and the beaches were great. Santorini is not a beach island at all.

This surprises me. Outside of the Acropolis and the neighborhoods around it (which are great), Athens looked like a graffiti-covered slum. The metro was horrible. I think Paris and Rome have a lot more to offer.

We arrived at 10 pm. The airport is 50 minutes from our hotel in Giza so my introduction to Cairo was that drive. What did I see? Highway that expanded to as many as 7 lanes, but lanes are arbitrary. The most useless job in the world is painting lines on the roads in Cairo. No one stays between them. Pedestrians cross the highway. It’s bananas. What is zooming past the daring walkers are motorbikes with wives on the back loosely clutching toddlers in each arm, flatbed trucks with either riders sat precariously scrolling on their phones or cartoonishly high stacks of cargo strapped down impossibly tightly in the back, vans filled with a dozen people, and yes, camels and horses. Near accidents are as constant as the incessant horn beeping, but no one gets angry. No one flicks anyone else off. I’ve never been in an agglomeration so big. One of my drivers said the population was between 25 and 30 million people.

The people are super friendly. This is not without motive. Everyone is trying to get your money. My favorite dude said to me, “How can I take your money from you, sir?” Every morning we had breakfast on the hotel roof, and the guy working it was so happy despite having about 6 teeth. He’d greet my wife: “Good morning, princess!” Then he’d bring out the most delicious warm falafel bites and scrambled eggs. I had stuffed pigeon for dinner one night. I had eaten it as you might imagine, and the waitress laughed and told me they eat it like a sandwich, bones and all. The food was delicious and cheap.There is a lot of garbage and camel/horse/donkey shit in the street. Kids work. A boy named Alee working at a shop near my hotel befriended my kids and sought them out every day. The hotel people yelled at him every time. We talked about how that was going to be his life. No upward mobility.

I think everyone should go there once in their lives if they can afford it. I’ll never forget it.

Third world cities, man. Sounds very similar to my wife’s experience in India earlier this year.

Did she enjoy India? I don’t think I’d go there if the trip was free. I’d wanted to see the pyramids my whole life and they surpassed my expectations. There is nothing in India I really want to see, and it’s really the one culture I have no interest in. I suppose that’s awful to say, but I don’t like curry so the food is not a draw, I dislike the accent as much as a southern American accent, and I have no interest in the Hindu religion. Plus they have cobras and, in my experience, wear polo shirts when they work out.
