It's a squishy concept, and somewhat up for debate. But public perception plays a huge part, I think. If it was just "which song best captures an artists' sound" we could often be picking somewhat obscure songs.

That's how I think of it

Pearl Jam's biggest chart hit is still "Last Kiss" but it doesn't sound like them and I don't think it defines them in the public imagination
