I thought the scene at the end with Ulf was unnecessary. One of the few things this season has done really well is to show how Rhaynera has bit-by-bit worn out any connection she has with him. We didn’t need another character explaining to him how he should feel, it’s already been on the actor’s face. Treating the audience like a bunch of dummies with that one.

They could’ve gone with a shot of Ormund and then Ulf and his dragon rising behind him to convey the alliance, and then all the viewers that aren’t book nerds would be left to figure out which dragon it was because I sure can’t tell them apart.

This is true, for sure, but unless you've had it spoiled again for you, I doubt many people will have retained that info.

If you're interested in how GRRM writes (or used to write, anyway lol), it's really interesting to see who and what is mentioned in ASOIAF/the GOT show and who is not, and you can tell what's been in his mind for a while and what he invented later on to fill in holes. For example (spoilers for the books and the future of the show):

Rhaenyra is referred to in the first book but not named, and then she is mentioned directly in Swords, Crows, and Dragons (and notably in the show), so George had the idea for her story percolating since the beginning and fleshed it out as he got deeper into the series.

Criston Cole is mentioned by name in Crows and is referred to as The Kingmaker, so by the time George got to there, he had a large amount of that story fleshed out.

Otto Hightower is mentioned as a King's Hand in Swords, but I don't believe his time period or any other details are mentioned, so that name was kicking around since back then.

Aemond is mentioned in Dragons as Aegon's brother, although no other info is given.

Notably absent from the entirety of ASOIAF so far is Daemon; the name is mentioned often but it almost always refers to Daemon Blackfyre. Certainly the name would've fallen out of favor after the rebellions, but considering how big of a role he plays once he's introduced in the World of Ice and Fire, it's clear that George didn't come up with that character until then. I would be shocked if he was never mentioned in Winds.

First episode of this season was incredible. I can’t say I really enjoyed it much after that.

Lots of good in that finale, but they made a lot of changes to the source material with essentially the same ends with less build. It almost feels intentional to say “we are just gonna do what we want and George can’t stop us”
