Back in the 80's TV crews from other countries could not figure out how our audio guys got such a great sound to their live broadcast from the skiing track which was several miles long. Few years ago there was finally an article that revealed how our "BBC" has been adding skiing sounds on top of live cross-country skiing competition broadcasts since the late 80's. They had recorded skiing sounds in various conditions, loaded those to synthesizer and then there was a guy playing those sounds from a keyboard to the live broadcast. And they did and still do that to other sports too, and also add crowd noises like cheering and clapping.
