Have I mentioned my neighbor’s massive gum tree, aka the absolute bane of my existence?

It looms over my back patio and pool. These things drop leaves, gum nuts, and branches constantly - and at certain times of year, shed their bark. I’m out there every two days sweeping up its crap - and if it’s a windy day (which can be quite common here), the stuff it drops is ten fold.

I had to invest $1300 in a “winter cover” for my pool, just to keep the skimmer basket from filling up with leaves and gum nuts over half a day - which renders the water filter useless. Then I have to power wash my light patio pavers way more often than I should need to due to all the dirt and grime and animal droppings resulting from this beast.

I approached my neighbor last year about an adjacent gum tree that was dying and got that removed, but the arborist at the time said there’s probably no way the local council will allow the other one to be taken out, as it’s protected. I asked around and you basically need a massive branch - or widow maker as they’re called - to fall to get them to consider removal for safety reasons. And that’s another thing, my kid is out there playing all the time and these things, even when healthy, can drop massive branches. Hence the morbid name.

I may need to poison this thing somehow. As beautiful a tree as it is, I can’t deal with it anymore. It just has no place in an urban back yard.

Came back from our week away to find the top foot or two of our young trees along the back fence had been attacked/eaten. Very sparse.

Suspected an insect pest and sprayed some stuff, but kept noticing it was only the portion of the trees that reach above or near to the top of the fence. After some research and talking to neighbors in the area, pretty sure it’s possums - they’re everywhere here.

Currently installing spikes atop the back fence to keep them away from the trees, hoping it works.

Possums are motherfuckers. They ruin everything. We trap and skin them over here.

i do have an iris that manages to poke out every year and sometimes the bunnies or deer miss it. this year it was able to bloom and looked great

these days I am mostly focused on arborvitae and camellia health

was a shitty year for vegetables. long and freezing spring. late planting and just not that great results. next year, redemption

Rabbits can be stubborn, so consider containers for your bulbs if you haven't already. I order my indoor greenery from houseplants because their delivery is reliable and plants arrive healthy. We hear you. Mrs Wease has only had one tomato. I’ve only gotten 4 peppers and none from one plant. We’re hoping the potatoes do better.

yeah i saved ton of heirloom seeds from last year which was a banner year and planted them this year and have just one midget that has ripened so far. got a bunch of yellow
romas those seem super hardy. carrots either gonna be late af or never came up. i think i know where i can re-up on those heirlooms next year and will try to buy sprouts instead of seeds. good thing we have a robust global food supply chain and tariff free markets to help make up for the shortfall. if i were a subsistence farmer i’d be dead rn.
