Notably, he doesn't just play drums for Paul McCartney, he's a backing vocalist as well. Like Matt was with PJ

Re: Next Drumoise
He’s a session drummer, Ed will probably just tell him to sound like Matt sounded:
About his playing, Laboriel noted: "As much as I would love to say I have an original sound, I think the truth is I have an original filter. I'd listen so much and so hard to so many different people that what's original about me is not necessarily what I play but how I play it, how I interpret it hasn't already been done. It's more about the energy and the intensity, it's not about the specific fills, it's more about the intention."

I’ve never heard a Pearl Jam performance and thought, I wish there had been more backing vocals.

Can they take backing vocals duty on Low Light away from Jeff? I know it’s his song, but he always sounds terrible harmonizing with Ed.

I went hunting for examples of Abe's playing outside of McCartney, particularly anything a bit looser or rock-flavoured, and ended up at Michael Landau's Liquid Quartet Live, recorded in 2019.

Re: Next Drumoise
The late night (SNL? Conan? IDK) debut of World Wide Suicide, with Matt doing backing vox, really impressed me. It was the first time where I was like "Hell yea, that looks and sounds awesome."Matters wrote: Thu September 03, 2026 3:29 am I’ve never heard a Pearl Jam performance and thought, I wish there had been more backing vocals.
I do not care for his snare sound.Birds in Hell wrote: Thu September 03, 2026 9:49 am I went hunting for examples of Abe's playing outside of McCartney, particularly anything a bit looser or rock-flavoured, and ended up at Michael Landau's Liquid Quartet Live, recorded in 2019.

Matt’s backing vocals on ST are part of the reason that album is awesome
