So this was a lot.

I liked it. But it felt over stuffed, too. Feels like the emotional beats worked but there are also a lot of logic leaps/holes. Why is Punisher in this?

Cast is strong. Zendaya is fantastic. Loved the action sequences.

But I think laying the groundwork by giving her this kind of backstory makes the Phoenix stuff more interesting/believable. I think it heightens the impact. Planting those seeds is better storytelling, I think.

I'm not sure they were seeds they were full grown trees she murdered a bunch of innocent people after her sister taught her to mind rape people lol. She's the Purple Man basically. I would think a good person corrupted by absolute power would heighten the impact more than an awful person getting more awful.

Ok, not that I've actually seen the movie...

I think I like the groundwork being laid here. It will depend on how they tackle Dark Phoenix (assuming they do) down the road, but I like introducing Jean this way. There is inherent tension and doubt.

I thought her motivations were strong and believable. I think showing this as a potential lead into Dark Phoenix is interesting.

I never read the comic run, so my only exposure to the story has been the TV cartoon and the films. To me, this fixes a problem inherent in the story (the super dramatic shift/turn). This shows me that she's capable of darkness in a believable way. Now I think the promise of Phoenix is enhanced not diminished.

Put another way, what if this was a brand new character? How would you feel? I think it works, personally. If I imagine I'm brand new to the low, that I have no idea who she is or what is coming, I think the character works in the context of the story being told.

When the original comics story was done, what you’re describing really hadn’t been done before. At least not to this level. And the point was whether or not someone handed the powers of a god (or gods) could handle it. If power corrupts, does absolute power corrupt absolutely? And to pick Jean, who was one of the earliest female heroes at Marvel, that was a master stroke. There is no inherent problem in the original story. Maybe in the many adaptations that have come after, but not in the original storyline.

Probably poor phrasing on my part. Like I said, I didn't read the comics story. I'm only familiar with the adaptations. So apologies for misspeaking about the original story.

I'm also not totally convinced that I'll end up liking how all this plays out over time. But I'm not bothered by the choice in this movie. I like it as it stands now.
