I just think the song is *meant* to be combining tongue-in-cheek parts that don't take themselves seriously ("You gotta know..." mixed with the groovy, angular guitars a la "World Wide Suicide") with parts that do (the verses, other than the first one; the last louder verse, the outro). I think that everything we find "cheesy" about this song (including that chorus) is meant to hook the listener into the more serious stuff. And it does. First you think "Ooh, this is fun", and then "Ugh, but it's so cheesy", but before you know it, you find yourself listening to it more and more, and the depth reveals itself. Crashing stormy waves erode your shoreline every day. This song is a slightly-Sixties groove-fest (with aspects of "WWS", "Evacuation") uncomfortably mixed with an old "anthem" (e.g. "Given to Fly", "In Hiding").

Or something else.

I've usually skipped the track by 0:39. I can't understand the love for this track.
probably because you skip it before all the really great stuff happens.

If you can appreciate it for the first 39 seconds you're most of the way there, because every other part is better.

It doesn't really bother me too much either, but that verse still keeps it from being great to me (as well as how clinically precise the production is; I wish it was bigger and more messy). Having said that, I'll take this kind of production over the S/T stuff, on the whole.

S/T is really hard to listen to, so harsh, i got to hear Big Wave live the other night and i really liked it, but i hate it on the album because of the production

I find myself singing the opening lines to this multiple times a day. I hated the beginning at first but now I can appreciate the cheekiness.

This song live slays the album version. Just awesome. Changed my opinion. Didn't like it at Wrigley, kind of average on the record, but seeing it live in Baltimore really won me over.

Wrigley version < album version < a few newer live versions.

Yes. I just think the Wrigley version kind of put a bad taste in mouth. Seeing it in Baltimore made me appreciate it a lot more. I still don't like the echoey chorus, I think it sounds better more natural.

The chorus is echoey? I don't hear that.

Why does this outro end so fucking early? It's the best part. :(
