Pearl Jam and their Fox Sports Deal

Post by C4lukin »

I was just curious, and I doubt anyone knows the details. Does Fox pay the band a ton of money to use their songs, or does PJ allow Fox Sports to use their music for free to promote the new album?

I am asking because the World Series deal has extended to both the NFL and College Football. I have been watching the Texas and West Virginia game and they have played at least three Lightning Bolt songs during transition to commercials. I always wonder how that side of the music business works.

And if you have been watching NFL or College Football on Fox, this is a regular thing.

I dont think Fox pays. They dont need the music as much as the band needs the advertising.

I know PJ does not pay. At worst they allow their songs to be used for free. Where things get more complicated, is when you involve Sony/Epic. I have to imagine that at some level, they are getting money. There is no way the independence of the band came without Sony at some level collecting on every deal involving early PJ songs. I would love to see the numbers and how these deals work out in the end.

they'd get paid royalties every time it airs if the law in the u.s. is the same as australia.

I am not sure about Australian law... Dot dot dot...

But in Amurica! Fuck Yeah! Just a joke.

It is simply a contract. You get payed if the company using your music agrees to a pay you. In the case of PJ versus American sports PJ agreed to something. Which was the entire point of my post. Did PJ give their songs up for free? Or did Newscorp pay them a ton of money for their songs. Or maybe it is something in the middle.

I have no problem with it either way, I am just curious about how these contracts work out.

I was wondering what was going on with all the Lightning Bolt songs being used as bumper music the past few weeks.

There's a lot of PJ being played early here in the Eagles-Packers game. I would say it's even been more prominent than I noticed in the WS.

The notion that Pearl Jam would be paying for this is hilarious. This is a licensing deal. You don't pay if you're the one giving out the license.

I'm not sure it's any more hilarious than Fox paying PJ to use their songs.
