S/T(maybe just riot act) and earlier pj yes, but with current pj I can totally believe it.
You know, I have sometimes wondered about the possibility that maybe the kind of music they're playing now is consciously the music they revert to by default, i.e. the stuff they grew up with / created before Pearl Jam. I wonder whether their fall-back position is, among other things, that glam "fun" stuff. Which is disheartening, really. But it would have been interesting if the New-Wave which was Ed's music before PJ was truly captured in Backspacer (as they said it was supposed to be), production and all. It would've needed a really rough, naive production to really work, and unfortunately didn't get that.
Yeah there's a kinda goofy enthusiastic 80s quality in both, ia they should have ran with it all the way, or maybe that would have resulted in even more unintentional hilarity Idk.

It's ridiculous, but in a glorious 80s way. I like it like i do poison by alice cooper, or white wedding and rebel yell by billy idol or that word up song by who the fuck knows.

Basically :bammer:

Probably not as tired as Bruce Springsteen ought to be of singing Thunder Road, or Sting ought to be of not having written more good songs after leaving the Police.

Also probably not as tired as the other dudes from Bad Radio either. They must cringe every time they hear it knowing that it was their (sort of) song first and absolutely nobody knows it.

Don't think I've ever seen that video before, I'm surprised how little that song has changed in 25 years, even with two different bands playing the same tune.

And why the fuck did Stone and Jeff let Pearl Jam play and record an exact copy of this? I would have loved to hear those conversations in 1994.

I'd wager ed told them how he wanted them to play it.

I kind of got the impression that the early live performances were relatively undeveloped...they almost treated it like it was a cover or something. Then one of those got tagged on to that guitar-and-organ rendition and slapped on the record, and the song got stuck that way forever.

I think he sounds terrible there but the whole period is romanticized in all our minds. We were kids and in love with a band but I think the shit they get mocked for her nowadays has been prominent throughout their career.

An imperfect but impassioned pre-vowel addiction vocal?

And it's low on goat warble?

AND I don't have to imagine him doing his old white man pow-wow dances or that Manners fist pump thing while hearing it?

Sorry, but sign me up for that.

I don't buy into the "impassioned" argument about the 90's. Just because it was overemphasised doesn't mean it was any more impassioned than it was later. It actually sounds faked most of the time to me. It's one of the arguments that is essentially "i like it therefore is objectively better/more sincere".

Actually, what I said was:
A. Vowel addiction
B. Goat warble

This is one of the arguments that is essentially "I sum up your argument incorrectly and then feel like I've made a point."

Nope. Let me mathematize it:

imperfect past + impassioned performance + occurred before vowel addiction goatcall > imperfect present + impassioned performance + vowel addiction goatcall (speedracer edition)

This is what I'm getting, mostly from the last 2 albums. I feel like I'm being rushed through the songs.
