If R.E.M. "un-retired" I'd probably look forward more to its next album, than Pearl Jam's next album.

I prefer R.E.M.'s last two records to Pearl Jam's last two records.

Me too, even if those records didn't have the weight of a fan history behind them.

Is that a trash can lid I'm hearing in the opening part of lightning bolt?

The opening? If you mean the outro, then yes it sounds like something like that; what it actually is I have no idea, but it was also used in SoS.

They should of gone full gospel in future days.

And the line in MYM "going to heaven, that's swell"

Should of been "going to heaven, pray tell"

It's "Go to heaven, that's swell!"

Makes sense.

And they kind of did go full Gospel on FD, if by that you mean bad Christian radio.

Actually I think that if that was the intention, the OTT sentimental shlock of it is quite clever.

"did something out there hear?" - i like that part. that's the only part i have any feelings for at all. the rest i neither hate or like. it's just pure indifference.

Future days is an earnest overly sentimental heart on sleeve song that supports its own weight on the strength of its iron sincerity

that's a really nice lyric. The bridge is solid, too.

I fucking love this album. I think I've had enough time with it to know I would prefer to listen to it over 3-4 of their other albums at any given time. Of course this changes depending on my mood. The one thing I'm most surprised about is that even though Sirens isn't my favorite track on the album, its the first track I find myself putting on when I want a quick fix, and probably my most listened to song from the album. MFS is my clear favorite track though. Great album. I'm proud of the boys for this one.

The thing is, though, lyrically it's no more or less deserving of this shlocky production treatment than any similar Ed song has been in the past. Yes, it's pretty (if overly pretty) but surely there's no aspect of this song that couldn't have been served better, or more appropriately, by the relatively stripped-down approach given to "Thumbing My Way." Whether you like that song much or not, you have to admit to the quality of the treatment.
