Re: The Work-Out Thread
Got my first post-vacation workout in last night. 45 minutes of (lighter) weights and a mile on the treadmill. Not too bad; should be able to get a normal one in tomorrow.
Gym was pretty much empty last night. Oh yeah, Valentine's.

you're fucking killing it, dude. i don't post in this thread consistently, but i check it every couple days and your progress is laudable.Dr. Van Nostrand wrote:I thought i would go backwards tonight, but i did better again, i went 2.5 miles in 24minutes and 48 seconds. it was this post that got me going this afternoon. after several days of gluttony and sloth, i hopped on the treadmill yesterday, and thanks to some serious work in the last 10 minutes, i got to 7.5 miles in an hour. the problem is, that was exciting over 2 weeks ago. i've posted in this thread that i'm considering running my first marathon in late june, but i've made zero discernible progress toward doing it.
so this afternoon i decided i was going to go 10 miles. that would be a mile more than i've ever run at one time, and that was several years ago. after the first hour, i had gone 7.2 miles. the pisser is the treadmills at the Y stop after an hour. it only took 30 seconds to get back going, but getting going after a full stop is about as fun as stopping mid-piss. anyway, i managed and after the 9th mile passed, i had a new thought: 13.1. why the fuck not?
that thought got me excited and i made an error and ran the 10th mile too fast. i crossed it at an 1:24, but for the first time in a long time, my side hurt. i dropped back down to a 7 mph pace and the 11th mile wasn't too bad. miles 12 and 13 were absolute whores, though. i had no idea my skinny ass legs could feel so heavy. anyway, i hit 13.1 at a shade over 1:48.
i'm typing this with ice packs on my thighs and calves. if a half marathon feels like this, how will i ever make it through a full? i want to sign up this weekend. i really do, but i'm afraid i won't be able to do it 4 months from now. i'm not tired. i was never winded and aside from my zeal in the 10th mile that made my side hurt for 2 minutes, the only pain i feel is in my legs. it's pretty significant, though.
so, long ass email, but i'd love input. i'm 5'9" and 173lb. there is a gut. how much would dropping 13 lbs do? is there a specific food that would be a major boost to eat just before a run or along the way? should i be taking ibuprofen before i even run? i think i'm going to make a decision by next weekend.
ps. my nipples are pissed off.

I hate to break it to you, but you have some natural ability if you are doing a half in 1:48. You should be shooting for a 3:30 marathon and possibly a 3:20.daft twat wrote:you're fucking killing it, dude. i don't post in this thread consistently, but i check it every couple days and your progress is laudable.Dr. Van Nostrand wrote:I thought i would go backwards tonight, but i did better again, i went 2.5 miles in 24minutes and 48 seconds. I'm a firm believer in peanut butter on toast before a run. I like energy gels during long runs and prefer GU. Also, try some sublingual vitamin B drops before a run. I do this occasionally if I'm going for a PR or I'm just feeling particularly bad. Seems to add some pep in my legs.
Losing 13 lbs. will give a pretty significant boost. I would expect at least a 30 second per mile boost.
I personally don't like taking meds for running. I took 3 ibuprofens in my last race and regretted it. But if you must, ibuprofen is the way to go. It reduces muscle swelling, but doesn't really mask pain.

Re: The Work-Out Thread
probably a silly question, but what are the thoughts about drinking while running? i kinda struggle with it because my breathing is still the toughest part for me, so if i take a drink of water i have to stop breaking for just a bit and it seems to make it harder for me to get my breathing back to a decent point. so in your guys long runs, are you drinking durring or just after? the last few i have just waited till after, but i do get a pretty dry mouth from the heavy breathing.

i registered this morning. june 22nd is race day. it's my first, but i plan on following the intermediate program at this link:I hate to break it to you, but you have some natural ability if you are doing a half in 1:48. You should be shooting for a 3:30 marathon and possibly a 3:20.

i'm worried about my legs holding up through this training, especially after last spring's double fracture, but i'm also excited about the prospect of accomplishing this endeavor.
i'll look into these energy gels for runs longer than an hour. pb toast for the hour or less runs? what about post-runs? banana and chocolate milk?

So how long should I wait after having bronchitis & pneumonia to jump in on this work out bit?

I find all of you inspiring, especially Doc. After feeling sick all week and only one workout and one ride into work between Tuesday to Friday, I just finished 1550 metres swimming. My longest ever. Going to suck back some water and find an easy 10km run to do.
Think I’m going to try being kind to everyone a chance.

Its so cool if i have been able to motivate some of you guys, because as silly as it may sound, reading about your workouts and getting to talk about my success with you guys has been a huge motivating factor for me and i wanna thank you guys for that and any suggestions you have given.
And after saying that, i just went 3 freaking miles in 30 minutes on the dot, i never would have though i would be able to run more then a mile, and now im at 3, im so dam excited about this

Re: The Work-Out Thread
I love where I live. Drove part way to work and then bikied from there this morning in shorts. Will drive back to my car after work and then go snowshoeing at night. And the whole time snowshoeing will be this very tight little ass leading the way. That is all the motivation I will need tonight to get a sweat going. It's not a workout, it's an expidition in keeping that ass in sight.

Re: The Work-Out Thread
Marathon training day one:
According to the chart I am following, I needed to do 3 miles today. My legs are still sore from Saturday, especially my left calf, but I pushed myself since it was only 3 miles. Finished in 21:50. I know that's not record setting or anything, but it wasn't easy. I am supposed to do 3 again tomorrow. If my legs feel okay, I will try for 21 flat.
