Best songs of 2013 (or how we all tried to win Stip over)

Post by ridleybradout »

I know there's an albums of 2013 thread but I couldn't find one for best songs yet.

After starting off rather slow this year, I now feel spoilt for choice for my best of 2013 playlist.

So post some nominations from your own lists here (or rankings if that's your thang). I'll start us off:

My working playlist (and today was my first run through, so I undoubtedly forgot a lot of stuff since these were all things that came to mind instantly either for being constantly present or reminding me of specific moments or anything like that)...

In aesthetic order, and not order of superiority. Also, only one track per artist:

1. Motorway - Little Boots
2. We Sink - CHVRCHES
3. Dust & Bones - The Night Terrors of 1927
4. You (Ha Ha Ha) - Charli XCX
5. A Tattered Line of String - The Postal Service*
6. Sacrilege - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
7. Shut Up - Savages
8. Black Skinhead - Kanye West
9. Givin' Em What They Love - Janelle Monae
10. Runaway Radio - Deep Cotton
11. Get Lucky - Daft Punk
12. Falling - Haim
13. Chocolate - The 1975
14. Entertainment - Phoenix
15. Burn - Ellie Goulding
16. Hearts Like Ours - The Naked & Famous
17. I Was a Fool - Tegan & Sara
18. Song for Zula - Phosphorescent
19. Swallowed Whole - Pearl Jam
20. Damage - Jimmy Eat World
21. 30-Year War - Manic Street Preachers
22. It's Alright, It's OK - Primal Scream
23. Let Me Back In - Rilo Kiley*

*These are both old tracks that finally saw release on compilations, so I'm including for now because they both soundtracked some pretty memorable moments this year.

Yeah, I know my taste is terrible, so no need to further point it out. :)

My song of the year has easily been "Goldtone" by Kurt Vile.

Indie Cindy by The Pixies has got more playtime than any other song for me this year.

Although I listened to and didn't really care for the 3 songs listed so far. I'm such a pain in the ass.

It's kinda like Bruce Springsteen singing over melancholy electronica. I'm weirdly hooked on it.

the voice felt familiar and I keep trying to place what it reminds me of. I don't know that I hear Springsteen though

It doesn't remind me of full-bodied Springsteen as much as it does Streets of Philadelphia/The Ghost of Tom Joad twangy Springsteen.

That list is pretty craptastic, Lament, I had a much better opinion of you until today :(

And also Shovel & Rope's Birmingham (which by weird coincidence happens to be the hometown of the band I posted above):

I don't think the song itself is that special, but I love the synth/string arrangement on this. That hook is pure ear candy.
