Not really; the instruments get sparer and sparer until the drums are just tapping, and the music is just left with that acoustic riff on one string (?) and a handclap.

Pearl Jam sucks at fade outs. In addition to the two y'all are talking about (LB and LW), Rival's pisses me off too. I'd love for that song to go on about another 20 seconds or so.

I don't understand the thought process behind fade outs, they seem to always be bad

Yeah, it's a tough call. I used to be completely anti-fade out. I have come around a bit, but most of the time the really bother me. Like right when the band seems to be getting into a cool groove / jam, fade out. I guess on the flip-side, a cold / hard ending doesn't always fit either, so in that case, a fade may be more appropriate.

I love a cold, hard ending.

"Leatherman" is probably the closest Pearl Jam have ever come to writing a genuine folk song--part family history, part myth-making bullshit, topically it's one of very few instances of Eddie simply absorbing a snippet (or multiple snippets) of random trivia and translating it into song just for the sake of the story. Eddie really likes his songs to have meanings and messages and this one doesn't have anything resembling either, yet because of the gaps our brains must fill in on their own in order to process what the distant past (the 1880's for instance) must have been like, it has this dusty sense of mystery to it that I've always found unlike anything else in their catalog. It's folk music of the "Fables of the Reconstruction" variety.

Well, I still feel like the title track is one of the band's all time classics. Hearing the Buffalo bootleg has reinforced it for me.

The jam at the end is definitely a live highlight--shame they do the quick fade.

I think I also prefer the way Matt rides the kick live on the second verse (the "always something, never nothing" part), as opposed to the soft, syncopated drumming on the studio version.

I hate Matt's 'thump-thump-thump-thump' on the bass drum and ride, in any song, but especially this one. I still think the song itself is OK though.
