Re: Lightning Bolt: The Official Album Thread
I'm playing the whole album minus SBM, and it sounds great. No big 180 slowdown. Take out SBM and it works great. I think Backspacer was great when listening top to bottom in one consecutive listen, but I'm finding more meat on the bones with LB and I find myself repeating certain songs over and over again. Didn't do that with Backspacer as much as I dug that. SBM should have been a b-side. This album is holding up extremely well, my least favorite is probably sleeping by myself and i still really like that one too

On my way to work, I typically go:
Pendulum: Crank this really loud....a nice start to the morning drive
Swallowed Whole: Chiefly because it comes after Pendulum and I like it
then I skip to:
Sirens
then I skip back to:
Pendulum
then I skip to:
MYM or My Father's Son

Interesting, My drive in the morning has been:
Pendulum
back to My Father's Son
skip to Lightning Bolt
Infallible
Pendulum
Swallowed Whole
Then I'm usually there. If I have more time, I'll cut back to Getaway and MYM after Swallowed Whole. I'll end up hearing some of LTRP, and say to myself "what the fuck?" and skip back.
I probably have given SBM and Yellow Moon less than 10% of spins that I've given the tracks above, and I actually enjoy both. I've heard each only 4 or 5 times. They are still fresh for me, anyway, just rarely in the mood for either. I think I've only listened through all of Future Days maybe twice

Re: Lightning Bolt: The Official Album Thread
I've probably hammered this album a little too much, so I've been giving it a break for a while. Usually after some hibernation, and an album resurfaces again, either: I find a new love for the album/it doesn't improve any more/I start to dislike it. We'll see what happens when it seems like the right time to give it another go.

Re: Lightning Bolt: The Official Album Thread
I'm pretty fixated on Getaway and Pendulum. I totally dug Backspacer, but I forgot what it was like to get so immersed in a song like that. I'm doing endless repeats of those two and Yellow Moon and Sirens. Then, when I really wanna rock out it's MYM and MFS. Then, when I wanna sig deeper into the album, it's LB and Swallowed Whole. And now finally, I full run through (minus SBM) is starting to make sense. I just had to eliminate SBM from the equation and all was well with a full album play. This album looks like it'll have more than enough staying power for me.

It is. When I read that people are enjoying LTRP and FD even more than SBM, first I'm like WTF and then I feel very envious.

Re: Lightning Bolt: The Official Album Thread
It could be. It just doesn't fit with the song sequence. With it, the album slows down considerably when you have that followed by Yellow Moon and then Future Days. I was feeling like it loses momentum and missing some rock. But when you take it out, LTRP serves that rock purposes and Yellow Moon is midtempo enough to hold onto some pace and Future Days closes it out. SBM is like this quicksand that slows the pacing, and doesn't make sense lyrically on the album.

it's not even that slow a song though--it moves along at a nice clip.

When I listened to the album a few days ago I felt as though that song really derailed the record. I actually quite like it removed from the context of the album but it felt totally incongruous when placed with the rest of the material.

I still think My Father's Son is one of the band's best post-Binaural songs.
