Best songs of 2013 (or how we all tried to win Stip over)

Other than Pearl Jam, who else is there?

Just listened. So yeah, I really like this album. In a way, it's not all that surprising (and never gets quite as good as the bookending songs, along with track 2) but maybe surprising isn't the point with this kind of music. It's a bit of a shame that the electro element only really appears in one or two songs. But other than that, yeah, I would definitely listen again and see what happens. Definite potential.

that Phosphorescent song sounds like that one Tom Petty song.

edit: oh that reminds me, I have a song for Lament's thread.

This album (and this song in particular) shattered my perceptions of what you could expect from a traditional rock band two decades into their career. It is simultaneously true to who they are while also sounding like absolutely nothing else they've ever done before. And even if you have no knowledge of them, it's just a killer fucking song. Intelligent, insightful, angry, dramatic, daring. Great music, great lyrics, great production, great performance. I ended up (unfairly, but for good reason) making a lot of comparisons between this album and Lightning Bolt (my two favorite bands, both releasing their first album of their third decade together merely weeks apart; It was inevitbale), and it probably caused me to be harsher on LB than I should have been. I can't help it though.

And yes, stip, I know you won't like it because of the vocals.
:)
this was probably the best manic street preachers song you've posted thus far.

also, you're way too hard on lightning bolt, which, based on this thread, I am almost ready to call the album of the year
Lightning Bolt is by far the best album released in 2013 so far. The only other album that is in it's league is Chvrches debut effort. The Kings of Leon album has me excited for their next one because it was a solid album. Everything else only had a song or two worth a damn. In my opinion.

2013's been kinda slow music-wise for me, but here's some stuff I've enjoyed jamming.

Saltland - "Golden Alley"

Colin Stetson - "Part of Me Apart From You" is the song I intended to post, but for some reason I can't find the studio version on the 'tube...

Pat Jordache - "Steps (Damaged Goods)" This one hasn't seen official release, yet, but I'm posting it anyway. They've got some other good songs on Bandcamp, but I like this one more.

Braids - "In Kind"

Esmerine - "Translator's Clos II"

Jerusalem in My Heart - "3anzah Jarbanah"

65daysofstatic - "Sleepwalk City"

Sandro Perri - "Love & Light (Larry Gus Panamix)" Yes, it's a remix, but I think it's a fantastic reinterpretation of a really good song.

Sigur Rós - "Ísjaki"

Yamantaka // Sonic Titan - "Whale Song"

Matana Roberts - "Thanks Be You/Humility Draws Down New/Benediction" Not necessarily my favorite part of the album, but I think it's nicely representative of the whole.

click on embed/share on the album's page, get the wordpress code and find the album's numerical id inside of it (in this case: 554552704), then use the [ bcalbum ] bbcode (without blank spaces obviously)

Glad you enjoyed! I like reading people's lists because that's one of the ways I discover new music. Most of it I might not like but there are usually some gems in there.

Here are some more that I liked this year:

Hot Lunch - Monks on the Moon; I also really like their song Lady of the Lake but I don't see any tubes out there for it.

Screaming Females - Poison Arrow

Wooden Shjips - These Shadows

Coke Weed - Sunseekers

Gun Outfit - Lau Blues

Pond - Giant Tortoise

Ben Harper - I Don't Believe A Word You Say

The Experience Nebula Room - Ignition
