If you mean it sounds like 90s dated, well, if it did we'd probably all love it.

Re: Sirens
Just for reference, what are some recent rock albums that have a warmer, fuzzier, live recorded sound?

Superficially I suppose, but there wasn't so much synthetic protools precision in those days. A song like Swallowed Whole could have been on an early REM album except that it has no roughness and imperfection in the recording. No character. So I'm not talking about a popular genre as much as a quality that renders these songs inoffensive to the general casual listener's ear.Mine wrote:What is the sound that appeals to a wide audience today? But they're not skilled at successful, catchy and popular songs that appeal to a wide audience anymore. I think they enlisted BoBs help in the belief that he could help them create that sound. They're all appealing to more pop influences these days which are no less Pearl Jam but they are less interesting. And then Bob has a hand in adapting those songs and rearranging them for mass consumption. He's a scapegoat because all he's doing is helping them achieve their aims.
I wonder if they are actually too raw for what the general public is used to. I'm being serious btw. I mean the end result, whatever the intent was, is kind of dorky. Those toms in Sirens don't even make sense in this logic because of how overdone that trick is. Who falls for that any more?

Re: Sirens
Of course they're too raw to really do what Pearl Jam wants them to do. That's because they're Pearl Jam songs, and that's why their vision of 'popular', if left to their own devices, clashes so much with BoBs. The blam toms are a cliche because they've been a popular choice in pretty rock ballads for like 50 years, and BoB probably has an encyclopaedic knowledge of successful musical clichés.Mine wrote:harmless wrote:There is no one sound is there? Re: Sirens
possibly not. It explains why I don't like some of the songs as much. I'm not saying it was the wrong choice for the album--just that this choice created a ceiling.Mine wrote:He does but i don't think if he sounded enthusiastic it would have worked for RA.stip wrote: I think eddie sounds tired and defeated and that is what often turns me off (in some places it works great).
Infallible and getaway are the only two songs on this album that feel 'high'. I think he sounds amazing on stuff like yellow moon and mind your manners and pendulum.

Just in case anyone's in any doubt, I do love this song. But it was Tuesday so I had to be negative about something Pearl Jam-related.

If sirens and future days were both drowning, and sirens asked you to save future days, do you love this song enough to honor its wishes?harmless wrote:Just in case anyone's in any doubt, I do love this song. But it was Tuesday so I had to be negative about something Pearl Jam-related.
