Albums you love, but seem to fall through the cracks.

Post by Kral »

Maybe Im alone, but there are so many albums that I like or even love that seem to just get lost in the shuffle of an endless amount of new music.

Just started listening to this gem again after quite a while a lengthy absence.

Everything by weezer, rufus wainwright, pixies, I used to love these bands but they just don't speak to me the way they used to.

Could you guys give a brief description of the album, or maybe post what you consider to be its best song?

Is this about albums that "fell through the cracks" for us or from a general perspective?

This is one album I listen to regularly that I think could possibly have gained a wider audience than it did. Crunchy guitars, super strong melodies and great harmonies. The lyrics are smart and a little obscure in their meanings which I also love. All the 'pop' songs are in the first half and the second half has a lot of dark, brooding, moody numbers that are slightly less immediately accessible but still really strong. Solar Sister is my favourite. Other standouts are Dream All Day, Flavour of the Month, Definite Door, Coming Right Along.

Oh I thought it was 'general' but now I'm unsure too.

Wintersleep - Untitled (2005)

I have never understood why this band isn't more popular outside of Canada, and this album is the first one I play to anyone who expresses an interest in them. Just stunning, from beginning to end. It pretty much captures everything I love about music played by one band. I don't think I've had such an emotional attachment to any other band, post-Pearl Jam.

Three songs. I wouldn't say they're 'representative', as I love every single second of this thing, but they do hint at its quality.

Also, fuck Matt Cameron. Loel Campbell is the beast you came for.

They've changed quite a bit from album to album, but it's all good in my opinion.

The Amps were Kim Deal's attempt at a new band after the Breeders disintegrated after Last Splash. Nobody gave a shit about this album when it came out IIRC and there was never a second album. It's a shame, because this is an outstanding album with a number of standout tracks. I've always loved the closer, "Dedicated". Kim would later resurrect "Full on Idle" for the following Breeders album.

By falling through the cracks I mean on a personal level; albums that you once loved (and still do) but for whatever reason, you don't find yourself listening as often.

For example, this little ditty.

Oh, well that sort of disqualifies my album then... Maybe it can be either, because, well, I still listen to every album I once loved. The only reason I wouldn't is if I thought it was crap now.

So many of these for me. The biggest is probably Pretzel Logic by Steely Dan. Such a brilliant album that means the world to me. But I never want to listen to it. There have been times that I've forgotten that I own it. Then I flip through my old CDs and I go, "Oh fuck yeah! Pretzel Logic!" And then I flip passed it and don't put it on.
