Christmas Music

I thought about posting this, but I wasn't sure if it counted as a "Christmas song," per se (though the "Jingle Bells" riff and the opening verse definitely give it that vibe).

Beautiful song, though.

I hate Christmas music. I hate that the same tired music gets trotted out every year, music that I never liked in the first place. I hate that I had to hear this shit music on a loop at every mundane monkey job i ever had growing up. I hate the concept of music created for a certain date on a calender.

I'm not really into Christmas music, either; it's too overdone and annoys me. I do, however, enjoy the Charlie Brown stuff, and Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmastime."

Speaking of "new classics," what about "Christmas in the Sand?" Has that one been getting regular play elsewhere the past couple years, or is it just the Buffalo-area station? I guess it might still be too new to join the canon, but it seems to have embedded its way firmly into the radio playlists.

I really enjoy the old standards sung by Bing Crosby or the Rat Pack guys and the original versions of the Grinch, Rudolph and Frosty. The classics. Plus Cheech and Chong that one is hilarious. Hate when modern pop singers sing Christmas songs but of course my wife loves them. Celine Dion and crap. The kids help me over rule her during drive times though.

Even though it's not a traditional Chritmas song, this is probably my favorite. My brother was pretty distanced from the family when he came out, my Dad was a major asshole. And even though I wasn't super close with my brother, mostly due to age difference and his moving out when I was young, I've always felt an emotional attachment to this song at Christmas. Then after my brother died from AIDS the meaning of the song really hit home. That and I absolutely loved James Honeyman Scott, Pretenders original guitarist who I believe the song is written about.

google tells me 2000 miles is mistaken as a Christmas song, but regardless of the inherent sadness of it (as well as that Joni Mitchell song I posted) they have always been good songs to express some of the melancholy associated with this time of the year specifically for the reasons you mention - we miss the people we miss more around the holidays. it's nice (at least to me) to have some songs that take that into account...
I always miss my mom more at this time of the year, so I get where you're coming from. and I've mentioned it somewhere else - but it can do with being repeated - if you're not feeling terribly upbeat - there's nothing better (again, at least to me) than being able to express that with good songs to sing along to... heh... merry christmas!
