I can't believe Kubiak lasted this long to be honest...I always thought he was the biggest reason it took that team so long to make the leap to being good

Texas has called a press conference today. Stay tuned for a firing.

Yeah, I've long got the feeling that they're going to say that Mack Brown retired, but it's really "retired" in the same way that Bowden "retired".

Time to get this thread warmed up for next week. Here are some thoughts:
--Rex Ryan thinks he's getting fired, and I agree. I bet Idzik would have fired him last year if Woody Johnson would have let him.
--Munchak looks to be in trouble now that Bud Adams is gone.
--Unless it results in Gruden returning, I'm going to LOL if the Raiders fire Dennis Allen. He had no hope under McKenzie's deconstruction plan. If he does go, I'm guessing that it's because Mark Davis will go over McKenzie's head to do it.
--Sadly, Shanny's probably gone. :(
--Gotta think Jim Schwartz is in deep trouble now that they've been eliminated. I'd also fire Mayhew if I were the Fords, but they're the ones that kept Matt Millen employed for a long time.
--Leslie Frazier may be gone, but I think the Vikes have a QB problem more than they do a coaching problem.

Is Jimmy Haslam channeling Al Davis? Seems pretty harsh after only one year.

Out of curiousity why would you fire Mayhew? Schwartz is his only coaching hire (most GMs get 2 or 3). They have actually developed and drafted a decent amount of depth at DL, RB and OL. LB is much improved and CB actually has decent depth- just no real #1.

RB- Bell (scrap heap)
OL- Sims (4th rounder trade) Raiola (old) Warford (3rd rd) Waddle (UDFA)
TE- Fauria (UDFA)
DL- Willie Young was a 7th, Jason Jones was an under the radar FE.
LB-Levy (4th)
CB- Bentley, Slay, and Green have all shown some talent.

I actually think Mayhew has done very well the past 2 or 3 off seasons in terms of percentages- its just his big misses (Titus, leshoure) have been so visible that people dont notice he has built a hell of a roster with some depth and development.

I've got a weird feeling that Schwartz isn't going anywhere this year.

You do make some good points on some of the lower level hits as opposed to the higher level misses. Especially Sims, that was a steal in that trade.

One area where the Lions have struggled recently is with the salary cap, especially with their handling of the pre-CBA Suh contract.

The problem with the cap, is that the rookie scale had gotten SO out of control, that teams that were bad leading up to the most recent CBA had a HUGE cap problem. Obviously a bad team cant let their best players walk (Suh, Calvin, Stafford, etc.), but they make WAY too much money on their rookie deals. Honestly, the CBA should have allowed for that and made anyone on their rookie contract have a cap hit similar to the cap hit of the slots once it was enacted (even while honoring the actual dollars paid out).

The thing I am most encouraged about is the Lions have only 2 or 3 major free agents this season (willie young, dominic raiola). Raiola played for the veterans minimum this year, and probably wont expect much more for 2 more seasons.. so a decent draft coupled with a smart mid level free agent signing or two, I really think this team can really contend for a championship with the right coach.

Well said, Joe:

http://www.ohio.com/news/browns-fire-co ... b-1.455846
“I’d be very surprised if they made a change,” seven-time Pro Bowl left tackle and offensive captain Joe Thomas said. “And I’d be very disappointed.

“You look at the great franchises. They don’t fire your coach after the first season. You can’t do it.”

Thomas said Chudzinski’s dismissal would not only be the wrong move, but it also “would be devastating” for the Browns, who have had six full-time head coaches since their expansion era began in 1999. Chudzinski was the fourth since 2008. The Steelers, who barely missed out on a playoff berth after beating the Browns to finish 8-8, have had three head coaches since 1969.

“It sets everything back,” Thomas said. “You just hit the reset button. Anytime you hit the reset button, it severely damages the organization, and it lengthens the amount of time that it takes to get back to the playoffs and turn the team into a consistent winner. … I think that this organization needs continuity and that’s the only chance that we’re going to have to turn this team into a consistent winner.”

The first coach fired during the "offseason " is a real dumb move

Chudz showed some promise even though they were trying to blow the team up around him. I figured he would be a part of the future plans for sure
